After having my DII recruit poached at the last second by a DI program, I became fairly peeved and noticed that I was far from the only one. Without even going out and looking for responses, I found a half dozen or more coaches who were ****** about the same thing and had expressed such displeasure within the past few days.
My initial thought is that there should be a hard line on recruits that each division can recruit. Maybe if a player spends a certain amount of time sitting as a DI recruit with no DI love, he can then be recruited by DII schools (as it is now), but DI schools can't then change their mind. Of course there are some problems with that, BUT......
On the flip side, an owner that I had frequent correspondence with during my first stint in HD emailed me again out of the blue to tell me the main problem is that there are not enough quality recruits for DI schools to get... and that they battle for a couple good recruits, then just sign a quality DII player in order to save their money elsewhere. Looking around, it seems like that is the frequent complaint of most of the DI coaches who resort to grabbing DII players.
So my question is this..... have they taken downgrading of recruits too far? Are there so few quality recruits that DI coaches are forced to poach DII kids? If so, there is a MAJOR problem with the system.
