What makes a good scorer at each position? Topic

I'm curious what the key attributes are to look for when trying to recruit good scorers.  What do some of you vet coaches think makes a good scorer at each spot, specifically for a motion offense?  How important are PER and LP by themselves and what other attrbutes have you found are most important?  For guards, is SPD or ATH more important?  Obviously if a guard has LP it helps, but I assume it isn't necessary?  For a post player I know ATH is important, but does SPD matter too?  Also, I assume some PER (maybe as little as 10-20) is enough to make a post player a good scorer?

In a PG I really like speed and BH. If you can get a great combo of ath, speed, and BH, that's even better.

You mention LP in guards and whether it's necessary, it's definitely necessary in my offense. My SG has decent ath, very good speed, and great LP for a guard and he's about to score his 1000th point in his junior season. I have another SG who has a good shot at getting 1000 points without ever starting a game in his career, because he shoots 50% from 3. I bring him off the bench to punish other coaches if they go to a sagging defense. He's not great at anything other than PER, so having a great PER rating can certainly make someone an offensive threat in the right situation.

SF(in my offense) is very similar to SG. I would trade some of the speed for rebounding, which is the case if you look at my SG and SF.

I always noticed SG's that had high BH were pretty good scorers with good speed and decent ATH to go with it.

Good stuff guys.  Thanks!  I hadn't thought of BH as being that important is scoring, but I can certainly see why it would be.

Looks very similar to a kid I've used the last two seasons as a back-up point guard/shooting guard who has averaged 7-8 points per game in about 16-17 minutes of floor time. With the right defense/matchup/night, my kid has gone off for 15-20 pt. nights as a reserve. This kid has a higher perimeter and better Pass and BH ratings, so I don't see why his performance would differ much.

I'm sure the lack of athleticism impacts him in some regards, but to be honest I really haven't noticed what that impact might be. I was scared to death when I signed him (he was Plan C after both my Plan A and Plan B got sniped), but I don't think I'd have any worries signing a similar player in the future. As long as he's got the speed, he seems to get his shots and gets about a steal per game despite a low Def. rating.

Thats what this guy was, a Plan C when everything else fell through.  His PE and BH was his "high" rating in recuiting.  I plan on using him just as a back up to the 2 guard only, but we'll see.  He's redshirted this YR so he'll have 4 yrs to get that PE up in the 90s! and BH up in the 80s

My Hood team has really good scoring guards (esp. Brooks) and a good scoring big (Harrison). Brooks was born to score in the new engine. For guards, I think that means anywhere from 60/60 ATH/SPD to 40/80 ATH/SPD with 70+ PER and 60+ BH. Some LP is nice (20+). These numbers produce points per minute. You need high ST (90+) for high PPG. For bigs, I think 50+ ATH and 80+ LP.

This is probably my favorite D1 recruit so far. My bigs (Ferrari, Waters ,Tourville) help him a lot, but still. his low post makes the play by plays insanely entertaining. Finger rolls, fadeaways, floaters, dunks, it's all there. Guy can put the ball in the basket.  He's not shooting well from 3 land, but he's great at 2 pointers.

In actuallity the same ratings make for great scorers at any position however it's hard to find bigs with good per and BH ratings and guards with great LP. A good baseline for what makes a good scorer for a perimeter player is ath/per/bh and for a big ath/lp. Ath being the most important, i know many will argue that speed is just as important for a guard or even more important than ath is but I disagree. I think that was the case in the old engine but not in the new engine. Not saying that speed has no importance, when you  combine it with great ath the combination is deadly. For example this player http://whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerHistory/Default.aspx?pid=1546359 averaged 27 PPG his senior season while shooting over 53% while only having 38per/60bh and 1LP but he had 81ath/80sp which is incredible at D3. I left LP out because it's hard to find good LP in lower level guards but in D1 I think it's kind've necessary to have guard with good LP if you want him to be a scorer. If you manage to get one at the lower levels in combination with the other ratings he will be an absolute beast.
