Would you sign this player to a LT contract? Topic

He's asking for 6.7 mill for 5 years. Would you sign him to this extension?

Solid hitter. He could play CF or 2B so yeah. If you're low on funds, have a replacement -- I'm sure you could trade him for a decent player. I wouldn't release him with nothing in return. The price is right for a guy like that.

I'd never put him in CF and only at 2B for another season or 2.   So you're looking at a LF who has a career OPS of .821 now and he will soon be declining.  If he was a missing link in my WS run for the next 2 seasons, I'd consider it.   Otherwise, you're looking at a 3y/20m LF who is on the decline for the rest of the contract.  And, if you don't have 18-20m in training, you'll be looking at a 1B with an OPS around .725-.750 for the last two seasons.

Mike, what is a good OPS avg?

If this is criticism of Mike's standards, I'm not entirely sure that's fair. Different owners have different opinions, and those opinions vary by position. If you're talking about a legit shortstop, I'd be downright giddy with a .700 OPS. But give me a first baseman or LF hitting under .850 and I'll be looking to make an improvement.

.821 is fine for a 2B.  Probably better than fine.  Your guy is a borderline 2B.   Under the current circumstances, he's good enough.   However, you're asking about the next 5 seasons.   His range and power will decline at 32-33.  That's the 2nd/3rd year of that 5 year deal.   So now you're looking at a LF who won't OPS .821(due to declining ratings).  That's just not good enough.    If you're just asking, that's my answer.   If you're looking for an argument and intend to dig into my teams(don't count NABCL, I took it over with 50 games left), you'll probably find a 1B/DH/LF who isn't OPSing .821.  That doesn't mean I'm happy with him, it means I'm playing the best I've got.  And my initial post still stands.  I wouldn't give a 5/33 deal to a LF who isn't going to OPS .821 over the duration of the contract unless that was my only option for a playoff run.

No, it was a serious question. This guy plays in the OF corners for me. I have much better options at 2B.

I really would like to hear what good OPS avg's are for the various positions

As prez said, it's different for everyone.   And you have to make concessions based on what you can get.

I sort of work a reverse D spectrum for hitters.   1B and LF need to be hitters first, fielders second.  I'd like .900 or better but often settle for .850ish.  RF and 3B are next.   I want hitters but I'm not putting a 44 glove at 3B because he can bash(although I will do it in RF).  800ish OPS.     Next is 2B.  I don't like to sacrifice D at 2B(which I'd be doing if I used your guy there) but I will if his bat is good enough.  That's why I said .821 is better than fine.  Your guy would be a bit of a defensive liability but I look for .750-775ish(or a basestealing threat) so his bat would probably make up for his glove.  Then you have SS/CF.  I don't like to sacrifice D at either position so I end up with some pretty sad OPS from them.   Catcher is sort of a filler.  If I've got the D I want, I'm more likely to use a C who can hit but is a bit inadequate behind the plate.  Conversely, if I have an extra hitter or two in my line-up, I may lean towards a defensive C.

Just sent you a sitemail Mike

Ignore the man behind the curtain and use him at 2B for a year or two. Otherwise trade him.

If you sign him to that contract, I'd make the 5th year a mutual option so you can be done with him if he's falling apart.

Don't sign him..  He's a .820-ish leftfielder.  He's nowhere close to a CF or 2B.  Mike is right...in a couple of years he begins to decline some.  By the end of your contract he's a real liability.

Let him go FA.  If somebody else wants to pay $6.7M x 5...let them.

You can find a .770 guy in your minors.  Then invest the $6.7M in upgrading some other position.

Or, more than likely, you can jump on this guy in FA for a lot less after nobody else signs him for that.

If he were 27 right now...I would do it, for sure.  But he'll be 21 next year...35 when the contract expires...and you will sure wish you had the money to invest somewhere else.

Or...if you're not in the playoff hunt.  Offer him in trade...

What about htis guy. "http://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2667034"  LF Hamish Stevenson. His OPS is only .749 over his 1st two seasons(.770 last year). But he had 33 HRs and 95 RBI last season with a low .258 BA. Only 17 2B and 0 3B, so he seems like an all-or-nothing type. But that's still pretty good production for a LF, isn't it?

Hamish is mediocre.  As a number 6/7 hitter, if you have OBP guys ahead of him, he's not bad.  Fair glove for LF.  He won't carry you...but if you have other bats, he's complementary.
