how many of you good coaches out there take them?

i like to RS a player a year? can you have an ineligible and  RS in one season?

Would you do that?

do they gain IQ during the season, i know they don't get to practice and gain core points?

do they always stay if they're making grades?

I don't have a D1 team so I'm only addressing DII.

Yes, you can have a RS and ineligible in the same season.  I currently have a team like that. It can present a problem, though, with foul trouble and injuries.

They gain nothing during the season; the ratings stay the same.

If they make the grades, they should return and still have 4 years left. In their last year, they'll be designated as Sr/5.

I do, it's a risk/reward thing.  In my experience they've gone juco about 1/3 of the time.  In D3 they never go juco.  However, they are dumb so they need more SH in their first season.  I've had to put guys at 20 SH in thier first year just to stay eligible.  However, you can redshirst them.  At D2 and D1 the main risk is that they go juco.  The 2nd risk IMO is that when they play as sophomores, they expect to get playing time like sophs even though it's their first year of eligibility.

Oh yes, definitely RS and ineligilbe in one season.

Done it many times.  You generally don't need all 12 players in a season, and 10 would be fine also as long as you have the stamina.

They don't gain IQ during the season.  Put all their practice points into SH, I've never seen anyone flunk out after doing that.  They will improve in the offseason between their freshman and sophmore years however.

yes.

I'm not a good coach, but I've signed 1 INEL, and have virtually sworn off ever doing it again.

If my team is pretty well set for the upcoming season I will sometimes go for an INEL.  My success rate is also about 66%.   You can find some good players going that route but it is a gamble.
