Cutting players Topic

According to the Players' Guide whatifsports.com/knowledgebase/KB_Article_Details.aspx if you rescind a scholarship, you do not gain additional money to recruit a replacement that season.  In addition to that, you can also lose Loyalty rating.
Keep in mind, that rescinding a scholarship of a player that you signed for no fault of the player may make recruiting for your school more difficult in the future as no kid will want to play at a program which isn't loyal to it's players. You do not receive any additional recruiting money when you rescind a scholarship. Also, cutting a player could cause other players to leave as well.

My first recruiting class, before I figured out what I was supposed to do, was large (6 players) and about half worthless.  They're going to be juniors next season and I really would like to cut 1 or 2 of them to help rebalance my classes and bring in better players.

The problems are these:  I'm at a D+ prestige, so I'm taking a risk that I'll be able to pull anyone down in the first place, or even recruit better talent.   I also don't want to have to recruit 3 or 4 players on the budget I'll get this season for having 2 departing seniors - if I can't spam a prospect with scouting visits I'm basically screwed, I think.

I'm assuming that if you cut a sophomore, you regain that recruiting budget after another season?  Or is the money gone until he would have been a senior?

Have any of you ever had other players leave after you rescinded scholarships?  Has the hit on your Loyalty rating hurt you down the road?

I have 1 junior on the roster and because I haven't been playing him, he's making noises about transferring.  Will I get budget money for his spot?  If I fill it immediately and have no seniors next year, will my recruiting budget be zero?  (That will make a difference on timing if I decide to rescind a couple of scholarships)

It's taken me 2 seasons to figure out what I'm doing wrong.  I'd really like to get it right and start winning some games one day :)

I don't think their is a loyalty hit for rescinding schollies, but there is a reputation hit.  When it has been discussed in the forums, people generally conclude that a poor reputation does not hinder recruiting.  It will impact you in hiring.

If you cut a sophomore, no money the season you make the cut, but if the spot is still open for next season you get money then.

Once in a while people post about players that left when they cut others, but I do not think it is very common; I'd say it is extremely rare.  I wouldn't worry about it.

It is not likely your junior will transfer, even if he is making noise.  If he does, you get the money right away.

If you have no seniors and no open slots you only get postseason bonus money and carryover money.  If you just let it ride you get 100% carryover into the next season.

Thanks for that, hannibal.

I'm currently plotting ways I can use combinations of rescinding and redshirts to even out my class sizes, but that all comes after bringing in better players first.

I've learned so much from posters on this board, and from uglyskunk3 in private mail, that I'm almost tempted to leave ACU and find another team to start over :)  But that feels to much like running away from a challenge to me.  I'll stick it out a few more seasons and see if I can actually turn this around.

Can't you rescind scholarships during the job change period before the season rolls over and get that money for the ensuing recruiting period?

nope, cant rescind till the season rolls

I think the risk of losing other players goes up if rescind more than one player - and even more if you rescind more than 2

That actually makes some sense to me.  I was thinking, in the interests of my poor rag-tag budget, that I'd just rescind one after this season and maybe another next season.  More later as required, but staggering them out over a couple of years.

It took me 2 seasons to get into this mess.  It'll take me a few to get out of it :)

Another useful tool for evening out classes is signing JUCOs and transfers

Same here. It's something that happens but it's so rare that it's not worth worrying about.
