How much does a good Defensive Catcher help? Topic

Between Pitch Calling, Arm Accuracy and Arm Strength, what have some of you veteran HBD players experienced in terms of how much a catchers' numbers reflect on the pitching staff?

In my first 2 leagues as a newbie, it seems as though, while my pitchers should be performing at a higher level, I am seeing an increase in BB/9 and a decline in how many innings they average per start, and I can't help but attributing some of that to the fact that my catchers don't have great numbers...

Any advice/input would be great- thanks

I checked out your Texas team. They have terrible control. That would lead to your high BB/9 totals. Your guys also seem to have high VE so they will be walking and striking guys out alot of the time. Each of these two things will lead to fewer innings per start and since you have these two things together you better have a bullpen that can routinely go 4 or 5 innings a game.
Personally, on my teams I have switched to a more offensive-minded C with great results, but I have also made up my lineup with very defensive players in the field so that probably makes up the difference for my defensively challenged C. I do like a good arm on my C but as long as he has 50 in PC I will play him. It really depends on your teams makeup but you can be successful with an offense first C or a defense first C. Look at your team as a whole and determine what you need the most.

IIRC MikeT23 had some data that suggested every 10 points of PC rating was equal to roughly a 0.25 reduction in ERA

A lot of it depends on your staff and your world.  PC is a OAV modifier.  Both of your teams are slightly above league average OAV.   You could increase the PC and lower it.   Your SB/CS % looks OK in both worlds but, if you want to improve it, improve the AS/AA of your catchers.  I called up Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Carlos Fernandez in Cooperstown because we were giving up too many SB.  He's a D-Replacement and no one has ran on him in 40 innings.

0.12 for every 10, I think it was.    But that was a couple of real life years ago.  The engine has changed.  But there is a noticeable difference between 80 and 50, not so much between 50 and 60.

here are my two catchers my lower pc catcher has done better. granted he had one third the innings the starter had. i think a high pc catcher makes a bigger difference when you have a weak pitching staff.

A ten percent improvement with 4 as the starting point is obviously better than a ten percent improvement with 3 as the starting point.

looking at your 2 teams you have 2 pretty good pc catchers on your texas team the problem is your control with your pitchers you only have 3 above a 59. you have a few that even though have decent splits i would never have them in the majors, and on your hartford team ctachers are not the greatest but with that pitching staff a 4.3 era isnt that bad it's really not that good of a pitching staff in my opinion you have what 3 good ones and a bunch with mediocre splits at best. very seldom do i ever have a major league pitcher with a right hand split below a 65-70
