i know.  there will be a chorus saying cut him...but i have the class structure i want and don't want to recruit more than three players this year.  given that, what is the best spot to give this guy minutes at?

Why give him minutes at all?

if he's your 4th best guard, let him line up as a backup PG/SG.  he should be able to hit some 3s against the better backup match up.

Recruit a better freshman and don't play Hughes at all.

You can probably "hide" him at backup SF and get some points out of him that way.  Maybe move him to backup SG if the team features 2 strong SF.

uconnut, it is tough to know where to play this guy without knowing who you bring in as a freshman. He has very limited defensive capability because of his spd and poor def. As haasdr said you can put him at 2nd or 3rd on your depth chart for SG and PG and he might be a decent scorer against some other teams backups. He has good BH and Pass so he would be a decent fit at PG as well. And another thing he has going are his IQ's so he would be a servicable backup most nights. Just not with a very high distro.

put him on the bench or lose with him on the court.

Why?  Why do you insist on playing the guy if he's not going to help you win?  Even if you don't want to cut him (certainly he's better than a walk-on), you don't have to set him high enough in the depth charts to expect him to play.  You can set him at 3rd or 4th string SG or SF and he will score some, probably not enough to offset the defensive liability but if you aren't playing a zone there's a decent chance he'll play against a backup from the other team who has low distro.  Of course, if he gets lined up against a starter or a 3-point specialist off the bench, he's going to get you killed.  I would probably set him as a mopup at both guard positions and SF.  Why do you not want to hear that?  If you're too attached to the guy not to play him that's one thing, but otherwise you really don't want him on the court any more than you can avoid.
