Ineligible / Redshirt / Upperclassman Question Topic

James Saltzman

If I redshirt him next season, and he has a year of sub-2.0 GPA, will he be eligible (at D3) to play the following season as a Junior, with a Senior season to follow? Assume for purposes of this question he maintains a 2.0+ cumulative GPA even with a year of bad grades.

I dunno. But I'll bump this so a D3 expert sees it!

P.S. Um, just give the kid enough studyhall practice so he gets a 2.0GPA as a red shirt? I know, sounds crazy, but it might work!?

All D3 redshirts get a 5th year.  Grades  aren't a factor because, at D3, ineligibles are allowed to play.    They'll miss part of a year, though, if their 1st semester grades are below 2.0, just as your other players.

But if his redshirt season GPA is below 2.0, will that have any impact on the following season?

Every player gets their grades up during the summer and plays in the fall. You just have to keep his grades about 2.0 from that point on in order for him to play a full four years.

Awesome, thanks - that first part was what I was unsure of (whether the sub-2.0 would effectively "carry over" and impact his playing the following season).
