College and High School scout budgeting philosophy Topic

Just curious for some opinions.  Is it more important to budget higher college and/or high school scouting dollars when you have a Top Ten draft pick or when you are at the back end of round one?

Or put another way, if you have a top ten pick will you get a quality prospect irregardless of budget, or will you miss all the really good ones.  And conversely, is there any real benefit to high scout budgets if you're picking in the high twenties, or are you just wasting budget dollars?

The distribution of quality in the draft is like the tail of a bell curve.  Which means that the differences between players are greatest at the very high end, and there's a pool of more similar players available as you get later in the draft.

Which means that the consequences of not seeing a guy are highest at the top of the draft, so you should budget high in both if you have a very high pick.  Conversely,  you can scrimp in any number of ways if you're in the high 20s or low 30s, confident that there will be several similar quality players available to you.  This is especially true if you're in a world with good quality players who all spend a halfway decent amount on the draft; under those circumstances it's not likely some stud will "fall" to you at pick #30.

I go with 20/0 or 0/20 because I don't know where I'll be picking and you can only move 4m per season.   That way I know I'm seeing the most possible from one set of players.    Sometimes it works great(I was picking 22nd in Coop and got my #4 rated player because 9 of the first 10 were college I had 20m in HS).  Sometimes it doesn't work so great because you miss some really good players.

+1, except that if I think there's a chance I'll suck I'll go to 20/4 or 4/20 so I can at least get to 20/8 if I have a high pick.
