Free team in Terrible Teams Prog. Topic

The Terrible Teams Progressive has just started it's 2nd season.

This league started with 20 of the worst teams in MLB history. Each season owners draft up to 5 new players(initial draft only owners were permitted to draft up to 7 new players) in their current season of progression (the Louisville Colonels started with the 1889 season, the draft just concluded was the 1890 season). The objective is to see which owners can most rapidly improve their terrible teams).

Full league description and rules are in the immediately following post. Rosters for the available team is in following posts.

Another owner has apparently dropped and his team (the 1975 Texas Rangers) will be available for  season 3. The roster is shown below,

The team has been entered and the season will start soon.
Being offered as a free team to an owner who will commit to 3 additional seasons.

This progressive will follow the Build Your Own Progressive format. The league will progress one season at a time. Listed below are 53 terrible teams from baseball history. The test is to see which owner can do the best job of improving one of these terrible teams. There are 2 important decisions you must make: 1. which of the available terrible teams has the best potential for future development and 2. selecting the right era with not too much competition for available players. Owners who select early will not know how many following owners are likely to select teams that will compete with them for available players as outined below. I will select after 8 other owners have entered.

There is 1 limitation-  there must be a gap of at least 10 years between 2 teams from the same franchise. This means, for example, that if the 1925 Red Sox are seelcted the 1932 Red Sox  cannot be selected. As teams are selected teams will be shown by bold face if taken or italic face if ineligible under the 10 year rule cited above.

It is my intention to make this a 24 team league but I reserve the right to make it a 16 team league if it looks like it will take an inordinately long time to fill.(note-league actually was set at 20 teams). I also reserve the right to permit owners to take 2 teams with the dual provisos that the teams will be placed in separate leagues and trades will not be permitted between two team with the same owner. I will permit ownership of more than 1 team only if we have exceeded 16 teams and it appears it will be difficult to get to 24 teams. Because I am trying to make this a stable 24 team league, and to reduce turnover, I also reserve the right to refuse entry to owners who do not have a track record of long term ownership in progressive leagues.

All teams will be able to draft up to 7 additional players from the same year as the team they have selected.  These may replace players on the original roster, or the case of teams without 25 WIS eligible players fill one of the vacant spots. The initial draft will be snake style, 1-20, 20-1, 1-20 etc. The order of the initial draft will be in inverse order of W/L Pct.-i.e.the team with the worst W/L Pct. will draft first. Ties will be broken by the use of random.org

The league will not allow a player (even though from different seasons) to be on more than one roster. Accordingly, as soon as possible after you have selected a team you should post a list of keepers (a minimum of 18). I will set up a private forum to which you will be given access as soon as you select a team, for use for posting keepers. The private forum will also be used for the 7 round draft. The draft order for the initial draft will be established by a random draw on random.org. Please bear in mind that if you are drafting one of the teams from the late 1800's or early 1900's there may be less than 20 players with WIS eligible seasons. You can use anyone shown on baseball-reference.com as playing for your team that season  who has was WIS eligible for the season, even if they don't come up on the automatic download from WIS.

Once a list of keepers has been posted none of the players listed may be listed as a keeper by a subsequent owner. Please check the keepers posted by owners ahead of you to ensure that none of your desired keepers have been taken. I will update  lists of taken players as frequently as possible.

For future drafts, all teams will progress one year at a time and owners will be able to draft up to 5 players from their current year. If the number of retirements and players on IR (not cuts) causes a team to need more than 5 draft picks, additional picks (also from the current year of progression) will be allowed subject to the following provisions: 1. The salary of any pick in excess of 5 will not exceed $1.5 million and 2. The picks in excess of 5 may not be keepers for the following season. Future draft order will be in inverse order of the prior year's final regular season record, with ties broken by the use of random.org. If a tie involves myself, I will ask an owner not involved in the tie to do the randomization. The limitation of 5 players per year for all drafts after the initial draft will require owners to carefully think out their strategy with respect to which players to cut as well as which players to draft.

Trades are permitted and traded players will continue to progress in accordance with their original draft year. Draft picks may be traded up to one year in advance except for the initial draft, where no future draft picks may be traded. Trades must be 1 for 1 or 2 for 2 etc.

No DH, WW, AAA, unlimited IR for players with seasons not WIS eligible, injuries off

The Indians current record is 28-34 tied for 2nd in a 5 team division. While you will be a rookie in progressive leagues, your championship record shows you are very competent- We'll be glad to have you. If you affirm that you want the team I'll arrange to transfer ir to you immediately.

so if someone else has Reggie Jackson on their roster the owner of this team could not keep him?  Am I reading the rules correctly?

also...will this league continue forever?  or just a certain # of years?

Yes, that's correct. If you are interested I will give you access to the private forum where there is a list of players already on rosters prior to the last draft as well as the players drafted.

The league will continue as long as interest remains. I request that owners who sign up be prepared to continue for at least 5 seasons.

One difference from the typical progressive is that all teams are not competing for players from the same year in each draft. Next season you would be drafting for 1975 and would be competing directly with the 1977 Tigers, 1978 Expos and the 1981 A's. It's possible that some teams from 1963, 1964, 1966, 1981 might have players on their roster you would be interested in but teams from 1891, 1918, 1919, 1927, 1930, 1990, 1993 etc probably would nor.

Trade of players from one era to another (and/or draft picks) is permitted, so you can wind up with players from other eras on your team.

I think the Rangers should be  a very competitive team for season 3. Their pitching is excellent with Brown, Hunter, Messersmith and Seaver all having very good or excellent years and Fingers having an excellent year as a closer. Harrah, Madlock and lopes are the nucleus of a good infield and Simmons is an excellent Catcher.

The draft is starting for this league-I will draft for the Rangers until a replacement owner is found. (The draft is completed). The pitching is outstanding and extremely deep and I think some very good pitchers could be traded to upgrade the hitting, which is good but not excellent.

The draft picked up (all 1975 players):

C   Johnny Bench
1B Steve Garvey
P   Randy Jones
P   Vida Blue
3B Buddy Bell
