If I sign an ineligible player, do I need to redshirt him as a Freshman in order to get 4 years of actual playing time out of him?

Not at DIII. He can play right off the bat.

What about D-II?

No, at DI & DII you can not red shirt him, he will be on the roster but unavailable to you from a depth chart.  To get the 4th year he needs to have a GPA of 2.7 (or higher) following his 3rd season (his "Sr" year).  Supposedly they can elect not to come back even if they are eligible GPA wise but that has never happened to me.

Also, put all individual practice minutes into study hall--he is not practicing with the team and will not improve (on skills or IQ) during the season.  It is a waste of minutes to put them anywhere except on study hall.

Okay, thank you.

He only needs a 2.0 GPA to be eligible at DII. The 2.7 only applies to DI.

Well that's even better. Thanks Weena, you seem to show up every time I have a question that has anything to with recruiting.

Thanks Weena...I didn't realize it was only 2.0 at DII.

Vandy_boy, you know the old saying "Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach." (and those that can't teach, teach gym)
