Div 1 and 2 recruits in mid-March 2011 Topic

Seble, I see that as promised, you added lots of new recruits i the low end Div 1 area this go round.  Most had overall scores of 510-570 and decent chances to improve.  The Div 1-2 recruiting problem, however, still exists because they all seem to think they are Div 1 players (they aren't, unless you count warming the end of the bench) and wouldn't even consider a visit even when promised a starting spot on my reasonably good Div 2 team.  The general response was the "hysterical laughter" one.  I made offers to 24 players in that group, none of which would even begin to consider us....and NONE OF WHICH SIGNED ANYWHERE!!!  Lower the expectations of where they can play and I think the new recruits will work to improve Div 2 and give Div 1 some bench warmers that are better than the Jr High School level walk-ons we usually get.

Steve, you may be right, but how "high" are you trying to pull down players. Myself, my ceiling "in general" is about 540, occasionally I can go 550/560. I signed this recruiting period with an A- Prestige at D11 Shepherd

1 Freshman SG, 525, and rated as the 134th SG &
2 Junior transfers (SG & PF) rated 564/160 something and the other 589/170 something.

Yeah, I always shoot high and yes I did get the hysterical laughter response a few times. Most of the guys I lost though went to D1 SIM teams.

My team was only a B- and the players I chased ranged from 508 to 571, with the majority in the 520-540 area.  The players I signed were all in the 490-500 area, all Fr,  and all with high chances for improvement so I should have an OK crew in 2 seasons.  Ratings of  the turndowns went from no rating to as high as the 80's.  The thing that got me going was that NONE of them signed ANYWHERE and none would give me any consideration at all, not even the "expecting to go to a higher program, keep in touch" right up to the final minutes of recruiting (I kept sending campus visit requests and schollies to any of them that didn't give me such a total turnoff that I knew there was no hope at all.   So net result is that there were plenty of decent recruits but they are now nowhere.

From a point of reference, I have a Div II team in another world, with an A rating, and we recruited a couple of weeks ago, before the latest recruiting change went into effect.  I got 3 Fr; a 516, a 543 and a 560 in that cycle.

When I first got my team, I was a B-. So I have some experience in the B range. At that level I kept my range between 480 and 525 and ranking no higher than about 170. You ought to be going for guys in the 490 to 520 range and ranking at the high end of about 180.

why are you idiots talking about players overall rating
3/26/2011 2:02 AM
aejones, agreed, overall rating is not any basis for recruiting.  I was only using it to make a point about all of these newly minted, extra, potentially good Div II recruits, that will never be more than bench players at Div I, wouldn't even consider a campus or home visit, wouldn't even say they 'd consider us if their top choices fall through, etc and then end up not playing anywhere.  It's a waste of time and effort having those recruits listed if they aren't going to be playing anyplace.  They should either be taken out of future listings or they should act like similarly skilled recruits have in the past.
