ML Quality Pitcher? Topic

I was looking over the Farm on of my teams I recently took over, and stumbled across this RH pitcher in the minors. His proj stats are...

Sta- 95
Ctrl- 100
vL- 47
vR- 48
Vel- 52
Grd- 42
P1- 100
P2- 88
P3- 77
P4- 47
P5- 51

I'm curious what other thoughts are on this guy (assuming he maxes out) as a ML level pitcher. His splits are obviously low, but does his command and 2 great pitches and one good pitch make up for the splits enough for him to be effective? Has anybody had a similiar pitcher who has had success (or lack of) at the bigs?

In a pitcher's park he could have some limited success.

Mop Up at best, otherwise.

CS calls splits "effectiveness" in DevChats, etc.  Think about how effective he'll be in the 40s.

I've never used a pitcher with splits that low, but it would be an interesting experiment to see how he does. My rotation features two guys (Dwight Lennon and Ren Nakamura) with splits around 45/60 who do pretty well for me, but I give them every advantage (world class defense and a home park that kills HRs) and those 15 extra points in vRH are pretty huge.

I'm a bit more optimistic; I think he might not kill you as an SP5.  ERA in high 4's in a neutral park.

I am  also optomistic.  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Jimmie Sanchez is a similar pitcher for me.  He pitches in a pretty good pitcher's park with a good defense behind him.  His velocity is better than your guy so he may benefit from a couple of extra K's.  Anyhow, he's pitched for me as a starter and reliever.  He currently is LR and spot starts for one of my lower durability guys every 15 games or so.

Interesting, I was figuring him for a mopup/LR, maybe emergency starter in case of injury type of player. Thats of couse assuming he topped out his proj which I don't think he will.

I think he'd be a decent option as a back-end starter in a neutral or pitcher's park, assuming he comes pretty close to those projections or exceeds them, and might even put up a surprisingly good season in an otherwise 1.50 WHIP/5.00 ERA type of career.

But a big difference between mongoose's guy and the linked players cards is velocity. I've found that 75+ velocity can really help overcome poor splits or poor pitches (but probably not both).

I have had good sucsess with controll pitchers throughout the years in HBD.

I think he gets relatively ripped as a starter  Very low splits...and he's a flyball pitcher who doesn't strike anybody out.  In a neutral park he's a 5+ ERA type guy.  He might be a long guy out of the bullpen, though.  Could eat innings when needed.  What's his Durability?  Mid-20's plus...make him a LR guy.

48 VR is WAY low.  I only have 3 guys on my MLB staff who are below 70 VR.  Two are relievers.  One has a 66 VR but an 83 VL.  The othe is a 37 year old I signed for one year, Set-Up B.  63 VR but 74 VL.

I have one starter below 70 VR.  He's a 66 (65 VL) but his GB # is 92.  First two pitches are 93-77. He's 37-24 in three MLB years.  3.41 ERA, 1.27 WHIP.

Your guy won't walk anybody...but he's going to get x-base hit to death.

Be careful about assuming that he reaches his projections...VERY few ever do.  His value, whatever it is, is also highly dependent on his pitches developing well, and pitches simply don't improve as much as splits do.

I seriously doubt he'll reach his projections. I was just curious what guys thought of him (or similiarly built players) if he were to reach them

Check out this pitcher - his stats are much better than his ratings would suggest he'd be. His Vs R is 44 and I was hesitant to use him, but he's been a serviceable back of the rotation starter / long relief man. The three pitches >70 make up for his low vsR setting.

A major difference between this guy and yours is that he is more groundball than yours would be, which would make a difference if you have a solid fielding infield (which I do).
