zone defense - double teaming players Topic

I know the zone is not that favorably looked upon in HD.  However, does anyone have success with zone defense and almost always double teaming the leading scorer?  Any thoughts?  the obvious drawback would be a coach spotting the trend and changing his distribution for that game - or a good player passing out of the double team.

I guess any thoughts on double teaming the leading scorer or another player would be appreciated.  Perhaps a stud PG wouldn't like to be double teamed?

I run zone with my UMass Boston team and I've yet to have success double-teaming an opposing team's top scorer. I tried it twice last season against the same team whose starting PG was the DIII leading scorer and lost both times, getting burnt by the double-teamed PG for 25-30 on ~50% shooting. About half the time he wasn't even double-teamed, due to him avoiding it or the extra defender not rotating over to help in time.

In my opinion it hurts more than helps

With a three two double team and the right defenders(Specifically the right sort of Small forward), it does indeed work on guards.    Likewise with the two three and also appropriate small forwards.

I use a 3-2 and recently faced a 3 headed monster team. 2 PG's and a PF. I actually went +2 and doubled the PF. The PF went 9 for 18 (50%) and got his but the guards took much fewer shots... if I remember correctly. This was also the only time I doubled anyone all season.

An example of a successful double team.
