Expert recruiting question Topic

I am in Division 3, and finally had a D2 player that looks good drop down in the 5 PM cycle. Recruiting ends tomorrow night at 11:59 PM. Since this player is so far away, I only have enough to do two scouting trips and a Scholarship offer. I also did not scout the state, so I don't know what his potential is, but his starting stats are quite good. My question is whether two scouting trips would be enough? It's also possible that another good player could drop down that I could do 3 trips on. I have exhausted the really local players that I really want, although I could get a decent player easily because I would have enough for like 10 scouting trips for one of those. Do you think that the two trips would be enough?

If he already dropped down why are you doing scouting trips?  You should be doing HVs for guys that have already dropped.  At the range it sounds like he's at CVs are really more cost effective; if you can afford a CV and a scholly offer (should be real close...) you'll almost certainly attract his attention (by which I mean he'll be considering you).  Assuming nobody else jumps on you'll get him.

I'd have enough for 1 Home Visit. Not enough for a Campus Visit.

It's usually pretty iffy with 1 HV on a dropdown, more likely he won't be considering you than that he will.  If you promised him a start you'd get him...  Or you could try repeatedly offering some minutes.  He might take them eventually and you'd probably get him, but he might not.  Start would be safer.

just spend the money you have on him in any way that he'll accept the effort... he'll sign unless someone else grabs him.

I'm thinking that a good strategy might be to wait until after 11 PM tonight. Some other closer good player may drop down. Plus, there is less chance at that point that someone else will jump on him. He's about 2,000 miles away.

I don't know if waiting until the 11pm window is a good idea. He may end up not signing. Like others have 1 HV likely won't be enough to get him to consider you. It might work if you throw a HV + a start, but that's very risky without knowing if he's any good. Do you have enough money to FSS his state and still do a HV? At this point I can't imagine it costing more than $200 to scout the state. If you do definitely do that.

That's an idea. I do have enough to do that. It would be $380 to scout the state. I am just afraid if I pull the trigger now, someone else will jump in. There was another player I was looking at in the previous cycle like that, which dropped down, and I almost went after him. A D-2 school is already on him. I figured if I wait until after 11 PM, a lot of the "human" coaches will be asleep, and many more will have finished their recruiting. And, there are some other really good players that are closer that have not dropped down yet. I'll see what happens after the 8 PM cycle.

all in all, on the last day of recruiting, i would say the last cycle or two are the most active - so better sooner than later. plus, if you give yourself a buffer, you have a chance to decide to offer a start if the HV alone doesn't work. finally, HV + 300 dollars of phone calls is almost certainly enough to get the player, so if u didnt scout, u might not want to.

If recruiting doesn't end until tomorrow, wait a few cycles to see if anyone else jumps on him.  If not, I'd go with a HV, a bunch of phone calls and maybe promise him some minutes (start with 10 and work up)  If that doesn't work, your last resort would be a promised start .  But I don't really think it would come to that.  Good luck.

Chapel, would you please let us know how your recruiting turned out?

I ended up going for a different player that was local and dropped down at the last minute. I was able to get him, because he was so local I could invest more recruiting effort into him, and I really wanted to be sure that I got someone.

Thanks for your help.
