anyone else do this... after you're out of the playoffs you promote all the guys you were going to promote at the beginning of the next season just to get the promotion bonus early?

just finished doing that for my team - lots of extra gains that  i would not have gotten - love it

I don't believe you actual get any extra gains, its just merely a reflection of the improvements made since their last development point.  I believe you would have seen those gains the following offseason had you done nothing.

It's a good practice to do your promotions before rollover just to reduce the possibility of retirements.

I only promote the guys I care about, the guys who are actually going to, or have a chance to, play in the Majors.  If the rest of the schlubs retire -- oh well

. . . many worlds have a shortage of minor league position players.

If he would rather stock his minor leagues with minor league free agents, why shouldn't he be able to?  I am not going to send a guy with splits in the 20s past HiA regardless of how old he is.  If he retires, he retires.

I agree with tec. By not promoting and letting guys retire you diminish the minor league talent pool in your World. There are leagues that don't have enough C's to stock every franchises minor league teams and some don't have enough P's to go around. This is a result of guys not promoting properly and letting guys retire that would otherwise fill a need for some team. You may think it is insignificant but it can become a problem when there is nobody to sign and a team has to sign ML guys and put them in the minors to fill the spots.

Or it could be because of the 61 overall LF that wants a four year deal worth 5.8 million per year. He doesn't get signed ( what a shock ) , spends six years as a free agent, then retires.

The overall rating should be bumped to 65 before they start demanding crap like that, or, maybe the minor league fodder should be more reasonable when demanding ridiculous contracts. They should really start out around 500k. That way the guy who could be a solid AAA player can keep playing, and not spend seven seasons as a free agent...


Thus, keeping worlds stocked with players.

Sorry, but I don't think that's the problem at all.  It's the amount of owners who don't sign enough of their draft picks and who don't promote properly.  I'm not perfect in that regard either but I do my best each year (SS, CF, C ALWAYS get promoted just because they can run out) to make sure I'm fulfilling those two obligations to the world.

Although this appears to be accepted, conventional HBD wisdom,  I believe it is incorrect.  Learned skills like contact, vL, vR, BE do not develop in the off season.  If you meant during spring training how do you account for the lack of a promotion bonus when prospects are traded during ST?  In a great majority of ST trades of prospects the prospects receive no bonus during the "trade" assessment.
