DIII jump to DI - Is it possible Topic

Hey all,

Just wondering if it is possible to jump from DIII to DI without going to DII. If so, what type of prestige and success is needed.
Wanting to jump to DI Ivy league and trying to plot a 5 season chart to get it done.

Any advice gladly interested.

Possible?  Yes.  In 5 seasons...not a snowball's chance in hell.  Only way you can do it is to build a long-term mega dynasty.

Look at uglyskunk3 @ Morris Brown in Knight.  He was able to do it...but that was after winning 5 NT Championships in 20 seasons.  He's pretty much the only one I've seen pull it off recently.

what about adambrag in wooden. 4 NT Champions in 6 years.he then jumped to dartmouth

Definitely possible, but you need to be pretty good.

Here's one: http://www.whatifsports.com/hd/CoachProfile/Default.aspx?uid=100872&wid=2 - one of the best D3 dynasties of all time

And another: http://www.whatifsports.com/hd/CoachProfile/Default.aspx?uid=478986&wid=2 - goo, not great resume, and actually took 4 seasons off in between

Ahhhh, OK thanks for the info. Gives me some goals to work towards in Phelan World, which is my choice to try DI.

You don't have to build a championship team to be qualified for d1.  I was qualified for a bunch of jobs (all D-) after four years and coming off a final four run.  I was qualified for about the next five seasons after that for very low level jobs, but if you're looking to get to D1, the D2 route is probably the easiest.
EDIT: Not under this alias.

i went from D3 to D1 in Phelan without winning a championship.  had 5 or 6 real solid seasons at Eastern Connecticut and had a choice of several D, D-, and some D+ schools

For sure possible.  HAVE to make the final four to do it in 5 seasons I think.  I could have gone after my first 7 seasons in Crum, and maybe after #6.

I had the opportunity to go in Smith after SUNY-Cortland made consecutive Elite Eights -- the highest prestige teams were D's. I don't think you can go from D3 to any kind of decent D1 team.

its definitely possible today. i don't think it is unreasonably difficult either. however, if you are looking to get to d1 as soon as possible from the start of the world, going to d2 is usually the best bet. but for a long time d3 coach, jumping to d1 i believe can be achieved with a couple really good seasons. if you are make the S16 4 times with a final 4 or couple elite 8s, you are probably safe - especially if you have all high win seasons. i am sure you can get into the C range, but that does take a fantastic run, so getting into the D range is definitely a reasonable goal - don't expect it to be easy though!

someone with more recent experience in this than I should comment, but I think you need to look at the risk too - say you do well in D3 and look like you are on the path to getting there, but then get unlucky, blow recruiting and have a real bad year - likely sets things back a bunch....may be less risk in the D3 - D2 - D1 progression

All good info. Looking to get into the Phelan Ivy league and a D is good enough for me ....
After next season is when I'm looking, because my Hope team will have a live shot at Final 4.
