Why is this guy horrible? Topic

This guy is driving me crazy.  I had him pegged as a star.  Am I wrong that this guy should be a solid 2-3...or is his performance to be expected due to weak post-1 pitch ratings?

He's not a star by any stretch of the imagination.   He has 1 good pitch.  His splits and control probably put him at slightly above average.   But he really needs better pitches to be better than a SP5 or LR.

Thanks for the input.  So, it's simply a case of my overvaluing him then.  Which is what I was trying to determine.

His performance isn't surprising.  To me, at least.

So, related question then.  Where do you rank 2nd and 3rd pitches in relation to splits and control, of which this guy is solid?

Plugging him into my handy-dandy SP evaluator, he's the 9th best option on my 88 game division winner.   And the 14th best option on my 109 game World Series winner.   IOW, he's probably pitching in AAA on both teams.

While pitches are important and his aren't doing him any favors, he's really only "adequate" in terms of splits and control and supplementals.  He really doesn't shine anywhere.

I would call a control of 75 and a vR split of 76 slightly above average, and not merely adequate.  The vL split of 63 is adequate (at best), but is dragged down by the pitches.

His splits control indicate he could be a SP3/4 on most teams.   He'd be a SP5 on my defending WS champs if his pitches were 85/75/65.

Sort of to what Mike said, if you gave him an 85 P1 and bumped the rest back to P2-5 (instead of P1-4) he'd be a LOT better.

He's passable, but if you're giving him 30 starts, you're not a playoff team.

How would he rank on your sub .500 MG team?

Yeah, that's the reason for the question.  The squad should be world series worthy on the position and defensive end next season, with a lot of questions in SP.  I was hoping this guy would be a solid 3, but looks like I was just ranking him way too high.

Well, with a good D he could produce league-average numbers..... ?

I'd be worried in Cincy, though.  A decent hitter's park, right?

If he's your 4th or 5th, sure... but I guess what I'm saying is that I wouldn't want to start him in a playoff game.

He's asking because he wants to win more than 77 games.   I assume.
