Using Web Queries in Excel to Import Data Topic

Hello, I was searching on the forums for a way to import Whatifsport data directly into Microsoft Excel. I saw this post.

Bermanap used web queries to import data, and I was wondering if anybody else knew how to do it in Microsoft Excel 2007 to make less manual work instead of copying and pasting everything.

If nobody can answer this then I will dig out my old K201 text book when I get home later.

Anybody figure it out yet?

I'm pretty sure I got it, just have to wait until the simulations run so I can see if the workbooks update correctly.

I figured it out, but I feel like it is gonna be tough (for me personally at least) to explain it in a step-by-step process. I can do that if necessary, but I'd rather just walk someone through it, so questions could be asked if I was explaining it wrong. Someone created a chatroll for HD not too long ago, so later today I could explain it in real-time for anybody that is interested. Just let a gangster know what's up.

This is a great idea.

A quick Google found this article with instructions:  www.techrepublic.com/article/pull-data-into-microsoft-excel-with-web-queries/6115870

Edit: Just did a quick test and it works great in Firefox and Excel 2011.  The link uses an older version of Excel, but the process is the same: Data -> Get External Data -> From Web,  enter URL and "Import".  Presto.

I did it and it works great for creating an Excel sheet with tempo free stats. I'm super busy at work at the moment -- but if someone is willing to put the Excel file up on a website where anyone could download it, I would be willing to share my creation and explain how it is done.

ethan66. Did you do that using Whatifsports, or a different site, because I can't seem to do it from whatifsports.

Grimacedance, I would gladly post that on a file sharing site like mediashare. I'll send you my email address through sitemail.

You can download Grimacedance's spreadsheet through this link:

Directions:
Go to "Sheet One" (ignore the Stout sheets -- I forgot to delete them). Delete all of the info on that sheet. Go to cell A1.
Data -> Get External Data -> From Web,  enter URL and "Import".
For the URL: In your internet browser, go to your team page and click on your team name so the popup window opens. Click on the stats tab.  Now copy and paste the url in your browser. It should look something like this:
http://whatifsports.com/hd/TeamProfile/Stats.aspx?tid=12525  (your tid number will be different, everything else should be the same). Use that address as the URL.

What you import should resemble what you see on sheet 1. Do not mess with this, do not delete or move anything. Sheet 2 should automatically update with the info from sheet 1.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The current sheet will likely only work for "11 player" teams (i.e. a team with a redshirt). I don't have Excel at home, but if there is any interest, I can create a 12 player one in the next few days.

I opened my team roster page and used that URL to import into Excel.   Easy peasy.

Yeah, figured it out a couple of hours ago.

For Ubuntu 11.04 which replaces OpenOffice with LibreOffice .... I just imported the stats info only and updated the links on the following sheets I created for 9, 10, 11, and 12 players ... This way I can just click on the appropriate number of players tab.
