Can this guy play LF well enough? Topic

My regular 1B, Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Geoff Hodges, was 2nd in the league in RBI last season. But I really want to get this guys bat in my lineup. Jesse Friedrich

Question is, can I put Hodges in LF without it being too much of a disaster defensively? Of course, I'm in the NL or I wouldn't have this problem.

In one of my worlds: Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Buddy Wall

407 innings, 11 negative plays and 4 errors. He's better defensively than your guy and, essentially, he kicks one every 3 games. You have to take it from there.

I'm going to experiment with him in LF for a while and see how it goes. Hope his bat outweighs his defensive liabilities. The pitchers may not be too happy about it, though.

It's just about trade-offs. If his bat can cover his defensive issues, it's worth it. But it does wear on your pitching staff because they have to throw more pitches.

Mike, if he only kicks 1 every 3 games(hopefully) I can't imagine that will translate into too many more pitches thrown.

its not just negative plays and errors. he may simply not get to balls that other competent LFers would which may result in more hits or extra bases hits. also, players may take extra bases on him since he won't be able to throw out many runners. you have to weigh that against his ability at the plate.

I can't envision a scenario where playing him in LF for an extended period is optimal.

Both guys are good. Can't you trade one of 'em?

I suspect over 150 games you are giving up about 30-35 runs above a LF with 0 errors and net 0 plus/minus. If he creates enough runs to justify that compared to your alternative, he plays. But i would be surprise if you can't find another player with legit defense who can produce within 35 runs of Hodges.

I agree with sp, a trade seems worth exploring.

Depends on the pitcher somewhat as well. Im much more comfortable putting guys like that in LF when I have a guy with an 85+ GB starting than I am when I have a flyball pitcher. In a couple of leagues I platoon guys by GB/FB pitcher like I would LH/RH. I do play guys like that in LF if the situation is favorable.

Hodges isn't so great that you can't find someone to produce close to him with better d numbers...
