How many study hall minutes after bad grades? Topic

I had a freshman get a 1.7 gpa on the 3rd report card, so I am trying to make sure he gets above 2.0 for the semester in order to qualify to play out the season.  Here is the relevent info:

- true freshman
- 2.81 High School gpa
- started with a 44 work ethic (now at 47)
- set to 8 minutes for the first 2 grade reports
- 3.2 gpa after those reports
- I took his study hall from 8 minutes down to 7
- posted a 1.7 gpa on the 3rd report

I don't have the info on whether he's a poor, average, or excellent student, but based on his gpa and his performance on the first two reports, it is unlikely that he is a poor student.  The 1.7 is probably an outlier, although I don't know for certain.

So, I want to be safe.  It would screw up my season to have him disqualified.  He needs AT LEAST 2.3 in the final semester in order to make up the average to 2.0.  How many minutes should I give him now?

If I had to have him to remain competitive then I would give him 15+ to make sure he remains eligible. It seems like 8 was the magic number with him, so doubling that amount should do the trick just fine.

.I have a sophomore who, after 5 minutes of SH, pulled a 1.8.  I increased him to 23 minutes of SH and he got a 2.4.  With 25 minutes of SH, stayed at 2.4.

Every player is different but just increasing to 15 minutes might not be enough for you

23 seems like a lot of study hall, but I trust your opinion, Al.

If you hadn't said 'it would screw up my season to have him disqualified', I might have recommended fewer minutes

I would go to about 20 in that situation

It doesn't really matter.  GPA is pretty random.

(4.0 - GPA rounded down) x 10 (+2 for Freshman) = SH

I adjust it every quarter after each midterm and each final, for Freshman I add 2 minutes reguardless just to play it safe, and I use a minimum of 10 reguardless of what year they are in and what their GPA is.

So for your Freshman it should have been (4.0 - 2.8) x 10 (+2 for Freshman) = 14 minutes to start the season
After the first quarter it should have been (4.0 - 3.2) x 10 +2 = 10 minutes
After the Semester 1 Final it should have been (4.0 - 3.2) x 10 +2 = 10 minutes
Now with a 1.7 3rd quarter midterm your gonna need to set it at (4.0 - 1.7 rounded down to 1.6) x 10 +2 = 26 minutes

I'm sure that prevents nonqualifiers, but it seems unnecessarily conservative to me.  So far (fingers crossed) I have not had a nonqualifier and I begin freshmen at 8 minutes and start chopping off minutes as soon as they show they can get a 3.0 or better. Only recently have I had any players get below 2.0 on a report.  It seems like something was changed in the engine to bring out more extreme results lately.  That's probably why the previous poster commented that gpa is totally random. So, now I am learning how to deal with these occasional anomalies.  But, I feel pretty safe on general with my strategy, and it is much more liberal than one you outlined.

Yes, that's why I mentioned it.  I see it as a risk/reward calculation.  It's like buying short term insurance.  I would probably be OK with 20 minutes, but I am willing to pay another 3 even if it just makes me a bit more secure.  In this case, the short term security is more important than the short term growth that 3 points would yield.  Thanks.

I have never had a guy fail in 15 seasons and also have never had a guy (except one this past season) finish any of their 4 years below a 3.0 and because of this I have never had to worry about grades and how much to add or take away from other skills. I just use the formula religiously and can than devote all my time and logic to the other skills.

Also remember the higher your GPA, the faster your guys improve their skill Ratings and Offense/Defense IQ.
Really?  I was under the impression that improvement was strictly a combination of work ethic, minutes played, minutes practiced, and the inherent "on the court" student aptitude of the player.  I thought gpa was just a by product and had no impact on the game except to determine acadamic eligibility.  Are you totally sure?

I never heard that before, either

  • Iguana1's BBIQ Practice Minute Chart: These are the ranges
I've found based on the 4 seasons since the iq grading has
    changed.
The number on the left assumes a "fast" learner.  WE of 80 and
GPA over 3.2.  The number on the right is for a slower learner.
WE around 40, GPA under 2.5.
Of course there are extreme cases on both ends.  I had a player
with a WE of 11 that took about 20% longer than the second
    number.
