I've signed two IFAs that I immediately assigned to the ML squad with good results. Never tried it with a draft choice.

I guess the question becomes about controllability.

Is a season of him at what... 20?  Worth the season down the road when he hits FA?

Does the team need him now?

It depends on what you need. Any player is a "play now" guy if his ratings are better than your current guy at that position and you are actually in contention (which would make him just as valuable now as later).

Didn't do it personally, but this guy never played a day in the minors after being the #1 overall pick in the draft:
