Free Agency / Option question Topic

I was messing around and excerised an option on an veteran ML pitcher at the end of his career.  He still shows up on the big league free agent list but the option to negotiate with him is gone.  Will he just be renewed at his full demands or at a minor league level contract or will he just go straight to FA with no option to sign him?  Also, will putting him back on the ML squad undo any dammage I may have caused?

What you're saying doesn't really make any sense considering where you are in your seasons.  Can you link the player?

Maybe this will help.

You're probably looking at a future season
5/21/2011 8:47 PM
There was no option to decline.

Nonetheless, he's in AAA.  You can't extend contracts on players in the minors.

It's the end of season 19 he would be a freeagent when the season starts. So, that's my question. Will he be automatically renewed because he is in the minors or just sent out in to free agency?  He was asking for 5 mil for one season when on the ML club  I demoted him just to see what would happen and now want to know if i'll get him on the cheap or lose him or what.

No, he'll still have BL demands.
5/22/2011 10:20 AM
He will go FA.  You'll probably still be able to get him for relatively cheap ($1-2mil) because people are probably hesitant to sign a 39 year-old pitcher.  But you'll have to wait until the beginning of the season to get him at the lower price.

I'm not sure why you think he won't re-sign during the pre-free agency period but I'm pretty sure he will.
5/22/2011 12:48 PM
Oh, sure...he'll resign.  But I wouldn't pay $5+ million for a 39 year-old pitcher who's showing signs of decline.

Thanks for the help guys.  Sorry it took so long to explain but you gave me the answer I needed.  He had a good season and I'd like to keep him around but i'll take my chances... I hope you're right Max about the 1-2 mil.
