I think I set a record today when the team I was playing against grabbed a whopping 71 boards. Anyone ever seen higher?

couple of questions for you bills:

1. I assume camspoppy is another ID of yours and you've been coaching Randolph-Macon for the previous 5 years also, right?
2. When you recruit, are you using pulldowns or dropdowns?  I just wonder with better guards from a better prestige and through pulldowns/dropdowns could you sustain a winning program as you brought in better and better kids.  You seem to be stuck around the C range and am just wondering if it's from chasing just D3 kids or what.
3. Would you mind sharing how you determined your starting 5?  I look at your guys and find it interesting who you're starting and at which positions they're starting.  -- For instance, I'd probably have Torkelson either at SG or SF,
-- I'd consider starting Radke at C (solid ATH, best REB rating, solid DEF for your guys, bad PE doesn't really matter down low + I'd turn his distro down a bit)
-- Wei at SG if Torkelson is at SF.  Wei is your stopper, I'd probably move him around as necessary to get more defensive pressure + elite ATH on the other team's best guys.  Yes, I know it's a press you're running, but if he's playing SG he'll factor in heavily if the other team has a good guard or a pair of guards.  If his other team is heavy on the inside game, then move him down low
-- Fowler or Swilley at PG?

The points above were just off the top of my head, I'm sure each and every coach would have a different starting 5 with that team.

It would be fun trying to build up a team like this, but also very frustrating I'm sure.  You have to break the rut of the C prestige though so you can start getting some real impact players and kids who can play defense.

i wouldnt normally want to speak for bills but he mentioned he may not be around.  im pretty sure he just took this team over this season and had nothing to do with the team previously.  he had to pick up all 12 (well 11) in this past recruiting cycle...which is why he picked randolph macon in the first place as it was easiest to start from scratch when trying to develop this kind of system.

pulling in 11 guys with 6 schollies obviously would have put a strain on his finances, but i'm sure he'll maybe be able to target guys that fit more specific needs with the classes to come when he's able to put more money into each of his targets

ok, that makes sense then.  I remember there being a topic about an all-guard team somewhat recently, but didn't remember all the details or who it was or anything.  It would be kind of cool to be in a conference where each team was somewhat thematic like this (one all SFs, one all bigs, etc).  Or at least a few teams.  And one where all schools started off on the same equal, crappy footing.  I wonder how many seasons it would take to really make this work consistently and be a viable NT team each season.

jdno, I actually completely disagree with your point re: emphasis on defense.  I've heard this before when people have talked about building a 5-guard team.  It seems like everybody right away wants to jump out and say, "well, you'll need great defense."  I think this strategy de-emphasizes defense more than any other I can think of.  The reason I say this is because the correlation between the defense rating and steals is quite small.  The advantage of the defensive rating is lowering opponents' field goal percentages.  Since the 5-guard teams rebound so poorly, lowering opponents' FG% is less important than with any other team.  The really important thing is getting steals and converting effectively on the offensive end.  I would definitely worry more about ATH/SPD and the offensive ratings and let the defense slip a little compared to my normal teams if I were running a 5-guard set.

dahs i agree.

jdno, that was actually my averett team that you are talking about.  we nearly made the NT in our 2nd season with only 2 upper-classmen on the team and are heading into our 3rd season now.  we're still pretty young in that we won't have any seniors, but we'll see what happens.  had two open schollies and not happy with what i ended up with so we'll mostly have to make do with the 10 guys coming back from last season.

you could very well be right with that line of thinking dahs (btw, that could be another team idea for the thematic conference...5-guard lineup + who gives a %@&* about defense?).  You mentioned the correlation is small, do you have data to back this up?  Just curious if you have something more than observations or a gut feel when making that claim.  Back in my early days of HD, I did some calculations using real data from a completed world (D3 only).  Nothing predicted better RPI more so than team rebounding ratings.  It was actually quite linear.  That's why I think it's so hard to run a 5-guard lineup, b/c this team would be at the very worse end of that regression..but also why it would be a great challenge to try to be that successful outlier.

I haven't been playing this game for very long, but I think the general consensus amongst the veteran coaches is that rebounding is much less important now than it was several years ago.  More than it was right after the most recent engine change, but still much less than it used to be.

As far as correlating defense and steals, no, I haven't done the math on that one.  The circumstantial evidence has been overwhelming enough to convince me.  For example, the 2nd highest career total in steals at my Rochester program - highest during my tenure as coach - belongs to Rick Golden.  He graduated with a defense rating of 19.

We aren't allowed to do these types of conferences because somehow its a form of collusion. We were going to do this a few seasons ago and seble shut it down.

that is lame.  collusion, haha.  right.  you know what else negatively affects my game experience?  having a conference full of crappy SIM teams that makes it impossible to get an RPI above 15 no matter who or what I do in non conference.
6/1/2011 11:44 AM
I understand the logic behind what you said dahs but I disagree. You shouldn't just say because you're going to struggle getting rebounds you should abandon worrying about getting stops, anyway you put it, it's better to froce missed shots than not. Also with poor D ratings you will commit more fouls.
