I am currently 2 seasons deep in a bad DI school.

Outside of the greater reward for making the tourney and moving on, what is the real benefit for staying up in DI?

If I keep being mediocre in DI, I'd never get any reward for being up there anyways.

Any insight here guys?

I've been playing for over 50 seasons and have never gone to D1.  I don't  like the tiers of recruiting in D1 and am perfectly content to stay in D2 and D3

if every coach who had 2 bad seasons to start d1 stopped playing d1, there would be about 5 coaches per world :O

i think the real benefit is getting to play another variation on the game. recruiting is WAY more competitive, its a new challenge, and a lot of people really like it.

I quit D1 after 2 seasons convinced from reading everything that I'd never be able to compete with a mid major school. I went back to my old D2 conference but not my old team since it was taken.

Since then my rebuild of the D2 school is going slower than planned and on top of that the D1 school I left went 16-0 in conference that year and made the NT with the players I had recruited in 2 years. I regretted bailing early like that since I had clearly taken the team on the right track.

I would say keep on it. You have done a good job thus far in recruiting and if you continue that, you'll start moving up in prestige every season.

D1 presents a huge challenge and I hate to see people quit so early. Stick with it for four seasons or so before you decide if you like it or if D2 is more of your thing.

I do have two D2 schools. One because I was no longer qualified for D1 and decided to take the challenge of a D- school, and the other because I like the owners.

I like the challenges of D1 but not everyone can live with having poor seasons to start out with.

i think it might be worthwhile if WIS would maybe make the award for not qualifying for the NT 2 or 3 bucks at D1 in recognition of the fact that it's a lot harder to qualify and to entice more people to actually try.  I do have 1 D1 team but it's hard to give up teams at D2/D3 where you're a safe bet to earn 5 or 10 dollar credits most seasons  to go to a D1 team where you may not make the NT for several years, if ever, and it will take even longer to actually have a realistic shot to win a game there.  when money is tight and i have a chance to essentially play the game for half the price at D3 or D2 that it will cost me at D1, it's hard to convince myself to take more than the 1 D1 team.

I'm not even sure how long I want to stick with my D2 & D3 teams.  D1 isn't even on my radar at this point.

ethan, if you aren't in one, find a full (or nearly so) conference - its a good way to keep things interesting. We've got a couple teams in the Heartland (D II) in Knight.

D2 is the place to be in this game....I love everything about D2

My division of Lone Star is full, no Simmies at all.  And E. Central and Midwestern State are both ranked this year (and most years).

It's not competition.  It's the feeling that I have no hope of ever getting better, either with recruiting or scheduling.  Most of the good D2 schools I tried to schedule for next season turned me down (I don't blame them, I would hurt their RPI) and the past 2 recruiting cycles have been disappointing compared to pre-update.

So any thoughts of ever trying D1 make me laugh.

You're disappointed in your recruiting?!??   I think your last class is outstanding. There's not a one that I wouldn't welcome onto my team. You even found a Jr transfer with good numbers who already knows your defense.
By the time those 4 freshmen are seniors, you'll be a force on the national scene.

Looks like he gave up a season too soon!!  alblack is correct, his team was put together for the long haul, and he was a good recruiter.  I am at the same crossroads in Phelan, but enjoy the better competition, and the one-and -done factor.  I hope to qualify for a slightly better team in a "human" dominated conference....I love the challenge!

Thanks, Alblack.   Maybe I'm just too impatient & hard on myself.  That freshman class doesn't include a pair of really good PGs I had targeted, but who wouldn't even talk to me despite being within my recruitable range.  One of the FR, Kegley, is actually a redshirt from last season (and Polk is redshirting now - he's going to be really good by his 5th year).

And, of course, the scheduling thing is going to take more time.  It feels like you have to have a higher prestige to get good teams to play you, and you have to play good teams to raise your prestige.  Kind of a Catch 22 thing.

As for that junior transfer - I'm kinda proud of him, as I took on a Sim battle and all I had to do was throw a few extra HVs at him and wait.  Who couldn't like a kid with a name like "Gagne"?  I'd like him better if his first name was "James", though. :)
