OK. Granted I reduced quality on my ML level coaches because the contracts were getting out of hand. I think that may have a little to do with my sudden (this season) pitching demise. But can anyone who has played in a heavy hitter's park shed some light on pitching strategies for fields like Colorado and Durham? Right now I'm getting shelled! Especially my bullpen. I've got a staff full of ground-ball pitchers and pitch ratings are pretty good. Velocity is weak (junk ball pitchers) and splits could be better. But the pitchers who are pitching well compared to those that aren't don't seem to follow logic.

It is pretty much the same for success anywhere as a pitcher, the better they are, the more success.  In a hitters park, emphasis on control, ground balls and velocity to reduce balls in play, all help a ton.  But that goes for pitchers parks too.

I would do the best you can, punt pitching and get some bangers and just outscore people.

Done. I'm leading the league in almost every batting catagory.

In parks where everything in play is more likely to be a hit, strikeout pitchers are key.

The only major league pitchers on your staff are Lane, Merrick, Shaw, and Espinoza.  The rest are AAAA.  Your average ML pitcher should be around 80 control/ 60 vL/ 70 vR.  Incredible numbers in one attribute can help make up for weaknesses in others, but use that as a baseline.  Your SP5 could be a little weaker than that, but your SP1 should be stronger.  High velocity or groundball tendency and pitches that are 80+ can also help make up for deficiencies in other areas.  It's good that you're picking up gb pitchers.

Also, I've heard reputable sources say that low splits get punished disproportionately in hitters' parks.  And obviously walks turn into runs more often at a park where batting averages are higher, so pitchers with good control are useful.

Maybe it's the world you are in.  Maybe return to Fizworld.
6/16/2011 5:06 PM
LOL Yea Fizworld was fun.  Pitching is at a major premium in Centerfield world. An IFA or top FA can go for $30Mil. Not many teams in this world have the kind of pitchers maxdeardorf is talking about. There are a few but certainly not enough to field 3 SP spots on a team. I do have some better SP prospects but they are another season, maybe 2 away from the big team. Shaw and Espinoza are getting the crap kicked out of them while Felipe Perez, who's numbers are nowhere near the previously mentioned guys, is having a pretty solid season. That's what is so confusing and frustrating.

Max, I just looked at your Philadelphia team. I don't think a single team in Centerfield has a staff like that.
6/16/2011 5:41 PM
Sallyleaguer, to be fair, I have no idea how you can claim that.  I just opened up the Centerfield world and looked at a couple of teams.  The vast majority of 1st place teams in any division have pitching that meets the criteria, as do a good number of 2nd place teams.  In the NL, I only opened up three teams, but all three of them meet or exceed the quality of my staff: Tampa Bay, Mexico City, and Boise.

 Since you're midseason, it would probably be difficult to find a solution right now to this problem.  But in the long run, you can strive to build a staff of pitchers who all (or in their majority)  follow the "210 rule."

Control + vL + vR >= 210

Like I said earlier, besides the gb rating (which you hit on), I'm pretty sure splits and control are more important in hitters' parks.

My team in Durham leads the world in ERA. Quality wins anywhere.

Thanks for the info guys. I never knew about the 210 rule.
