Can I end starter promise in the season? Topic

So 8 games into the regular season with Puget Sound in Allen (D3), we are an uninspired 0 for.

I promised 4 frosh starting roles, (we replaced 7 guys), however I think the losses are affecting development, (no proof, but minimal gains), also the school rep is taking a huge hit which will not help next years recruiting efforts.

Now that we're 8 games into the season, can I sub, some upper classmen as starters, since it is obvious we can't compete with freshman at this time?

What are the ramifications of that type of move?

Thanks.

So your home court advantage has dropped and your players aren't developing as quickly as you hoped?  Sounds like a rebuilding year.  Just take your lumps.  The answer is NOT breaking those promises.  You had to replace 7 players.  Build up the IQ and keep your promises.

As far as I know- losing or winning doesn't not impact player development.  Just practice plans, potential, and playing time.

No idea what the % is, but they don't have to start 100% of the games.  Go ahead and start the sr's in games where you think you'd have a shot.

I'm with asher on development though.  Outcome doesn't have anything to do with player development.  Freshmen just take a bit to get going.

EDIT for clarification - Spot start the seniors.  The frosh still have to start a big majority of their games or you'll break the promise and their WE will plummet (and possibly transfer).

Only start the seniors once you get to the CT.

used to be that 80% starts was safe - that got changed - now more like 90% but I dont know a number

I think you can safely give the seniors a start now and then - like a few times total - perhaps in games where you think you have a good chance

Ok, thanks.  If it isn't going to hurt dev of the young guys I'll keep playing them as starters and eat the losses.

The other thing to keep in mind is that if you start the seniors but completely remove one or freshmen from the depth chart and they don't play those guys will still be at 100% start rate.

starting actually helps improve WE faster I believe, which in turn should help speed development in other categories... write off the season and stick with the frosh. Come CT time juggle things and take the CT by storm. No one will expect it :)

We're 24 games into the season - 2 games left. I've got a starting promise and the player has started all games this season. I also have to finish above .500 to make the nt. Assuming I make it to the CT championship game (unlikely with the talent in the conference), can I break the promise from now for the remainder of the season w/o a we hit since I'll hit the 80% mark no matter what?

Yep.  CT games don't even count, and 24 starts is plenty.
