He has a 19 makeup but had a great improvement after being drafted ... how close might he come to his fielding ratings?

I'll make it simple, take a look around at the vets in your world, regardless of makeup.  You won't find many people w/ a 30 point improvement in any skill sets from their first ST line to their last.  With a 19 makeup, its going to be even tougher, not to mention the difficulty in finding/hiring a great fielding coach.  The odds that both his glove and arm accurcy get to the 85 range are very, very small.  Range and arm strength will get up in the 90s, provided a decent training budge.

Power will obviously be solid, but his splits, contact and eye will be too low to play regularly at 3b or in the OF.  I think you're best off selling him as a "defensive" SS w/ great power to someone that believes they can develop that glove and arm to his projections.  I don't think its possible, but there are others out there that will bite if you can get a decent prospect in return.

That guy will be hard pressed to make it past AA.

The initial question depends more on the accuracy of the adv scouting budget.

I continue to budget 20 for training ... I will check some past players with low makeup to see how much they improved ... he was a 43 at the time of the draft and improved to a 50 after a very good rookie ball season ... I thought the jump of 7 after rookie ball might give me some home ... time will tell

A good FI and plenty of playing time will be more important than anything else.    He already has the physical tools to be a good SS.   He needs to develop his learned skills.

MikeT123 ...thanks for the ray of hope ...I have a MLB Catcher with a 39 makeup who was a 40 when drafted and is now a 62 and is 27 years old ... I start him against LHP.

I am just looking for him to give me some ML defense in the future ... he was not a first round choice ... his rookie ball he had a BAVE of .310, with an OBP of .372 abd a slog% of .615 ... but he made 43 errors as my starting SS ... on the other hand he had 15 PLUS plays with 0 MINUS plays ... but again ...that was only rookie ball .. I am really hoping his glove will improve ... not sure where his 77 temper enters in and not sure what it means when his projected temper was only 76 ( one less than current).

to follow up, how much of an impact does makeup make in development? i have the #1 overall pick in a league and there's a stud pitcher with all the right tools except for a 27 makeup. should i look in another direction?

I know these don't mean a lot to most guys, but health and makeup are very important to me.  I will not draft, trade for (unless he is a vet and projected already, and then a low makeup may start his decline early and fast), IFA draft or otherwise pick up any players with crap health and/or makeup ratings.

I just personally won't take the chance on drafting or picking up that 88 OVR pitcher with a health of 55 and a makeup of 19.....too much risk he will only make it to OVR of 78 assuming he doesn't suffer a few solid injuries on his way up and end up a 74.

I also put a lot of stock in Durability, as I cannot stand a 'stud' that gets only 350 AB's a year.  I will need to platoon him and his combined position totals may come out only slightly above average.

It makes it a little harder to build a solid franchise but it can be done, leaving these risks out.  The only high risk type of guy I would take is the pitcher you typically see with splits in the 90s, awesome ratings across the board and a durability of 5 (meaning he can pitch every 12 games or something).  These guys are a lot more valuable in the playoffs where one start per series can tip the balance.

well, this guy is a 22 yo LHP:

current:     63 health 24 mkeup 23 dur 91 stam 59 con 70 vsL 54 vsR 71 vel 70 gb/fb 66 1p 56 2p 33 3p

projected: 70 health 27 makeup 24 dur 95 stam 91 con 100 vsL 79 vsR 86 vel 92 gb/fb 77 1p 71 2p 49 3p

(86 proj overall with my 14 scouting)

With those numbers if someone else was close to that, but not quite as good, with health and makeup much higher I would pick that guy. If the next best option is too far below this guy, you can always choose this guy and 'fool' some other owner in a trade, which works as well.
