Best Winning/Losing Late Settings Topic

For those of you who are experienced, which settings for Winning Late & Losing Late did you guys have set up that helped you most succeed. I know everyone has their own type of offense and defense, but it seems that regardless of settings or superiority in Low Post or Perimeter, the best settings applies to anyone. If you losing by 3 pts and there is 2 seconds left, regardless if you run regularly Motion, Triangle, 3-2 Zone.... or all your players got 99 LP and 0 Perimeter, you got to position for perimeter. Well maybe given settings are according to minutes left in the game and not seconds, you probably be better off going inside with 99 LP even if you down pretty big. But for majority who aren't that superior in one skill than the other, seems the settings apply to everyone just the same.

So in short words, what is the universally best settings you can set up for Winning/Losing Late to optimize your winning odds?

I don't know if this is the absolute best or not but I use "if winning/losing by 7 with 2 minutes left". For "if losing", I set my 3-point setting to +3. For "if winning", I set my defense to +1. I set the "intentionally foul" setting to 1 minute which the engine automatically defaults to anyway. Other coaches may vary the points or minutes settings but this is what has worked for me.

For me, I bump my base defensive positioning for the game by +1 for "Winning Late" (if I was at +2 initially, I'd be at +3 when the minute/point criteria is met late-game). My point/time setting is for a lead of 6 or more with 3 min. to play. I go -1 from whatever my base positioning was in the game for "Losing Late" and do that if down 10 or more with 6 to play (in the hope of grabbing more rebounds possibly...it  maybe gets a few more casual fouls that stop the clock and give me a chance at a miss/rebound/possession)

I bump my tempo to slowdown any time I have the lead with under 6 minutes to play, figuring if I have a small lead at that point, I want to keep myself in a position to win the game by having as few possessions as possible going forward. (If I have a big lead, I just want to eat clock, so slowdown still works well...)

I have my three-point frequency set to +2 when losing late, uptempo and I start intentionally fouling at 2 minutes if trailing by 4 or more.

I go to +5 on defense in the last minute if up 3 or more.  It sometimes baffles me when I give up 3 straight 3 pointers in the last minute with this defense, but it usually is effective.  I figure most coaches follow Weena's logic of increasing the number of 3s taken in the last minute when down.  I switched my defense around when losing, but generally have gone with what I figure most coaches will do offensively...decrease the number of 3s taken.  So I go to a - defense.  Initially I went -3, but have since softened that as it sometimes went against a defense that had been reasonably effective.  I rarely foul intentionally until the last minute unless my opponent has terrible foul shooters.  I've seen too many teams start fouling me in the last 2-3 minutes and end up in a blowout.

All the advice I see here makes sense. What really prompt to me ask about this. Well Once I was winning by 4 with like 2 minutes left, I had my defense set up for +2 or +3 can't remember but was one of those two. Then they were easily able to attack me in the inside and I lost that game. Seems like it was a safe game for me to win, but it really looked that what cost me the game was the game plan settings. I was just wondering if you ever had this kind of issue because logically, you also got to consider, opponents will know that if you lose by little more than 3 pts with a minute to go or any settings which makes sense for a team to focus more on the 3pts, that the opposition will know that and if they set up +5, then that means you may be able to be better off really attacking inside as they will leave it completely open. That's what seemed to happen to me that one game that I ended up losing they took advantage from the inside. So did you guys ever faced something like that which going +5 was what cost you the game?

I haven't seen the +5 lose the game.  It's usually more like turnovers that lead to baskets.  Once the lead goes below 3, my team reverts back to the old defensive settings.  So I wouldn't say it was the +5.  I think one flaw in your thinking is believing that you should've won when up 4 with 2 minutes to play.  That's rarely a safe margin.  To me, that's too early to change defenses, but I may be in the minority in that thinking.

Now that I'm thinking about it, it might have been as much as winning by 8, I wish I can see box scores from last season. But regardless of how how big my lead was and how much time was left, one thing I do remember for sure, it was a situation in which was obvious the opponent will try to shoot the 3s than attack inside and my winning late settings applied. But I lost that game with bunch of FG shots
