How important are minor league coaches? And is there a general rule of them to get maximum value out of them? for instance, I can resign my AAA hitting coach who has a 63 hitting IQ rating. Is that good for an AAA coach? What about resigning my rookie ball hitting coach who has a 62 hitting IQ? Or my Hi A coach whose hitting IQ is 70?

Just trying to put these ratings into perspective from league to league. thanks

Dump your AAA and AA hitting. hold on dearly to that HiA guy.  I like to go into the "Hire Coaches" tab and see where last year's coaches match up with coaches that could be available.  I took over a team in Kaline that had horrendous coaches for the most part and I was going to just dump them all, but there were a couple that I had to hold onto.  Also, keep in mind- for instance- teams looking for a ML pitching coach will hire a top available AAA guy instead of getting into a bidding war for top ML guys, so that can get to be cumbersome if you try and sign guys only in the level listed. Good Luck.

If you ever want to have prospects develop and make it to the majors... you want the best available across the board.

I generally resign all of my coaches because I'm just lazy. If I have a crappy hitting or pitching coach at one level, I just don't put any prospects there.

World Office --> Reports --> Coaches

Select the previous season, all franchises, and then select the role and level that you want to check.

You can see where your coach would have ranked last season in that role at that level.  That's probably the best way to tell if a coach should be re-signed to a particular role/level..

Since it really doesn't matter where you prospects are developing at in the minors, I usually spend decent to good money on, for example, AAA and HiA coaches, get average pieces of crap for the other levels in the minors and then put my good prospects in one of those two levels.  You simply can't hire the best coaches for all levels up and down the board.  Unless you have a huge coaching budget, then your sucking in other areas.

Forget LoA and get the best you can at the other levels.  If a guy is a good ML prospect he should never touch LoA.

+1 apollo7.  I can imagine multiple strategies working for this, but I generally follow the formula that he suggests.  Though I don't always achieve it, my goal is to get coaches who are 70+ in their primary skills in levels HiA thru AAA.  For the AAA group, they should be high 70s or maybe even low 80s.  Although I don't quite know how to measure the results, Patience and Discipline are also very important.  I shoot for guys with 50+ ratings in both, especially valuing numbers above 80.  Of course, I sometimes get beaten in the hiring process and end up settling for an inferior candidate...

As far as approach goes, the problem I run into in hiring coaches is whether super-high Patience and Discipline (say 80+ in both) make a hitting coach with a 63 hitting IQ worth taking, or whether a coach with an 81 hitting IQ but Patience and Discipline in the 20s would be better...I honestly don't know the answer.  I've watched good GM's do both things.
