I know.  WIS won't do it, but in theory, you could do the first round (maybe beyond) in your league.

Once your prospect list gets released, you start "drafting" in the trade chat.  Team with pick #1 takes so and so.  Then every other team ranks that guy number 1 on their board.  Or if you can't see them, then you don't have to worry about ranking him.  And you repeat until the day before the draft, so that everyone has a chance to redo their draft boards with the remaining players.

It would take 32 committed and honest/reliable owners.  If one douchebag were to take the wrong guy, it would cascade through the draft.

Is it worth trying?

Like you said, one guy can screw everything up, and crying about it to WIS afterwards wouldn't do you any good. But if you really trust every single owner in your league to do it fairly, it's certainly worth a shot.

I think it's worth allowing the top pick to make his pick anytime.  Once the top pick has picked, the second pick can go.  Then the third, etc.  That happens until draft day, when the rest of the draft is conducted.  The development time is probably not worth the added benefit, but you get closer to a "live" draft.

I think this would be a very fun thing to do, but as was mentioned it only takes one guy asleep at the wheel, or being a dick... however you do have an entire week to do the whole thing... would be doable, as long as there are no dicks in the bunch.

There's many problems with this scenario.  You nailed the obvious one of one person being able to sabotage the whole thing.  Also, many guys don't care about the draft all that much; you'd be lucky if you got 12 people to commit to it, let alone 32.  A lot of people don't put much time into the draft.  They use the fomula builder and then ignore the draft until it's time to sign their picks.  Lastly, this isn't even a LIVE draft even if everything went perfectly.  You still have to wait for your turn.  Some people don't log in every day or, they might not log in for many hours, maybe even a day or two when it's their turn to pick.  Even if a miracle happened and you got 32 people to commit to this, it would still take longer than the current system.  You figure everybody needs at least 3 days to rank their players and put thought into who they will draft.  That leaves 4 days to actually do a "live" draft.  If it takes 4 days, it isn't live, and my guess is it would take 6 or 7 days.  By that time, the simulated amatuer draft has already happened.

Your definition of a live draft is a weird one.  The goal people want to move towards is being able to, when it's their turn, look at the remaining draft board and decide for themselves who they want to take.  No one is demanding it all happen in one hour with all 32 owners logged on or something.  This suggestion would still be preferable to having the ranked list filter itself down.

Waiting for people to actually log in and make their pick is the biggest hitch.  With 7 days to complete ~32 picks, that's 4+ picks that need to happen each day, at a minimum.

It shouldn't take 3 days to rank the whole board before the draft can start.  The draft, the first round of it anyway, can start right away...it should take 15 minutes max to determine who the best player on your board is if you have the #1 pick.  You go, then the next person looks at the remaining board and makes their selection.  Ranking the rest of the board past the first round wouldn't have to be done prior to the first round getting underway.

This would be really hard to implement in practice, unfortunately, but it is a really nice fantasy.

My connotation of a live draft is the whole league sees who picked who at the exact same time, and the only way to accomplish that is everybody has to be logged in at the same time.  As for taking 3 days to rank guys.... no, it shouldn't take that long, but some people might want that long.  Some people might actually NEED that long.  The last draft I had I didn't begin ranking players until about the 3rd or 4th day after the list became available.  This was because I was really busy at the time.  I had enough time to log in, check boxscores, adjust lineups, and MAYBE read world chat, but I didn't have enough time to sit down and rank players.  This might not always be the case for every person or for every draft, but when you have 32 people in a league, most of which presumably have somewhat of a life outside of HBD, you've got to figure at least a handful of them need a day or two, maybe even three or four, to rank their players.

I guess I don't see the point of all this anyway.  You can set your draft board so that it will take the highest available player on your draft board when it's your turn to pick.  If the website does this automatically, why change it?  I don't get it.  There are a million things the engine does for us automatically and we don't need to be live on the computer to make it happen.

Next thing you know somebody is going to want to set it up so that on a single to LF with a runner on second base, they will want the game to pause until they have time to login and decide whether they want their LF to try to throw out the runner at home to save a run, but allow the batter to take 2B on the throw.... or concede the run and hit the cutoff man.

Actually they do want something close...live games in HBD have been discussed for a while.
