Defensive catcher who can handle pitchers Topic

I drafted this kid in the 7th round.  I know his contact and splits are not good.  Is his power going to be enough that I can start him and bat him 8th vRHP to take advantage of his defense and pitcher handling abilities, or is he a career minor leaguer?

Can't see his projections, but I'm guessing that, based on his current ratings and age, that he could progress to being a legitimate ML quality defensive catcher.  Probably not a regular guy, but an occasional spot starter and late inning defensive replacement.

It all depends on who else you've got in your system in the next 4 or 5 seasons.

If he gets at least half way to those projections and most of the way with his PC he is worth it.

His defensive stats are ML worth right now, but if he hits the 80's with his PC and gets into the 40's vR, I would use him as a platoon guy against righties.

Low makeup will negatively influence how close he gets to projections.  His Contact # may be the most limiting thing of his offensive skills.  12 (if he gets there) is pretty dang low.  He won't hit .200 playing regularly.  Probably not close.  I would guess his MLB numbers, even at Projections, would be .175-.215.-.365.

He can't play every day.  He's a great glove guy, but I wouldn't want him in the lineup very often.

I love catchers like this - I usually get one per year per world for $90K in IFA or in the mid rounds in the draft.  I use them as late inning defensive catchers or as platoon guys.  But I have never tried using one for a season at the major league level.  It would be interesting to see any results of this type of thing.

If he ever makes the majors, I'll let you know how he hits.

I would keep him in the system, but you will be able to grab a guy in free agency his equal for defensive catching attributes for about 1M as well so he is pretty replaceable
