OFS Injury and didn't even play in the game Topic

Has anybody else ever had this occur?  I had a player, Alfredo Jacquez, go down with a 170 day injury in the 11:03 PM cycle today, and the last time he played was 2 cycles ago in the 11:03PM2 cycle yesterday evening.  He's my #1 pitcher so I am pretty miffed about it, I didn't realize that you could have injuries happen to players in cycles where they weren't active and didn't play.  Is this a regular happening (players getting injured without playing) or did I just get screwed by a falling down the stairs with deer meat injury?  Thanks in advance.

Not uncommon.  Injuries are not always diagnosed immediately.

Thanks.  Still really frustrating though.

Yep happened to me while resting a prospect before the AAA playoffs.

Happen to me as well, my best pitcher was in between starts, just sitting on the bench enjoying the game and bam, he came down with a sore neck for 10 days.  I guess he was cheering his teammates on a little too much.  Anyways, it does happen, and I was just as miffed.

It's called "The Curse of Chico Ruiz".

Chico Ruiz was a backup infielder for the Reds and Angels in the 1960's, early 1970's.  In Cincy he'd get 200 AB per year or so, but his playing time dropped dramatically when he was traded to the Angels.  In 1971 he broke his leg...a slide at the plate if I remember right.  Anyhow, the story goes that when he called his wife to ask her to meet him at the hospital, she asked, "Did you fall off the bench?"

Ruiz Trivia:  He was the only player ever to pinch-hit for Johnny Bench, in Bench's first ML game.  In September, 1964, he stole home against the Phillies (with Frank Robinson at the plate, no less) to win the game.  The Phillies then lost ten in a row and blew the NL pennant, giving birth to "The Curse of Chico Ruiz."  Ruiz died in an automobile accident during the 1971 off-season.

Actually I have seen this before, and I believe the official WIS explanation is that what a player goes down with a season-ending "surgery" injury on an off day, it's because they injured themselves in a game and were deciding whether to have surgery or let it heal on its own.
