It's called "The Curse of Chico Ruiz".
Chico Ruiz was a backup infielder for the Reds and Angels in the 1960's, early 1970's. In Cincy he'd get 200 AB per year or so, but his playing time dropped dramatically when he was traded to the Angels. In 1971 he broke his leg...a slide at the plate if I remember right. Anyhow, the story goes that when he called his wife to ask her to meet him at the hospital, she asked, "Did you fall off the bench?"
Ruiz Trivia: He was the only player ever to pinch-hit for Johnny Bench, in Bench's first ML game. In September, 1964, he stole home against the Phillies (with Frank Robinson at the plate, no less) to win the game. The Phillies then lost ten in a row and blew the NL pennant, giving birth to "The Curse of Chico Ruiz." Ruiz died in an automobile accident during the 1971 off-season.
