It occurred to me watching a program that brought to life  Abraham Lincoln through an avatar to ask how far away we are from doing the same here from a technology standpoint?  We possess the likeness of most of the players who ever played the game.  Imagine putting them in a stadium with fans and "watching" the game unfold on our computer as if we were in a time machine...  an incredible dream come true for me to watch the all time greats from a first hand point of view.

Is this a reasonable expectation ever?  How far are we from this (if any distance)  being a reality?  What would we be willing to pay for a journey like that?

I'd pay for that in a heartbeat.

WE ARE SOMEBODYS VIDEO GAME FROM THE FUTURE

I don't think that would be a huge tech challenge - video games graphics are improving all the time.  A reasonable WIS game could be done.

However, developing a workable game would be expensive.  Plus, I'm not sure I'd like to spend watching my teams play in something approaching 'real time'.  Now you can knock off a live game in a half hour or less.  Do I want to watch my team play pitch by pitch?  Eh - probably not.  Maybe post season games, but not a full season's worth.

I'd figure each game would chew up at least an hour - if it's play pitch by pitch - and there'd be a lot of gaps.  Does anyone know what, say, Rube Bressler looked like during an at-bat?  Wide stance, closed stance, choke up on the bat, etc?  Probably not.

The entire game could be simulated before you get a chance to view it.  Then, you could fast-forward through parts of the game if you don't have time to watch the whole thing.  There could even be a feature that produces a 3-minute highlight reel for each game.  Playing LIVE would take longer, but it would be much more fun.

I hear what you're saying, JM.  And I saw the Bressler picture.    The only way it would be worth it for me was it they found a way to accurately represent the simmed players, in motion.  The still photo of Bressler above shows he chocked up on the bat - at least once in his career - but it doesn't tell you what a motion picture would tell you.

I think what the site would have to rely on for all players before the television age, about half the players in the database, would be some type of generic batter and pitcher.  That wouldn't add much value for me.

I also think I'd be less inclined to play live if it dragged on.  I'm just one user and I may be in a minority, so take it for whatever it's worth.  It'd probably be something I'd check out, but that's about it.
