Since hitters who are 85+ across the board are very rare, I tend to build my lineup slot by slot. I've got certain characteristics I look for in hitters for positions 1-6 (great eye for leadoff, good eye and contact for #2, as good as possible for #3, great power but can be lacking elsewhere for cleanup, great splits for #5 and another cleanup type for #6) and try not to use terrible hitters in the other two or three spots (hopefully they're great defensive C or SS, at worst). Obviously, I aim for the best players I can acquire for every spot, but that's not always realistic.
Of course, some players end up hitters themselves into or out of the roles I start with, but that's how I approach things in the offseason.
