I started at a D+ school at DI and have made it to the NT twice out of my first three seasons and I'm heading there again this season so I think I could give you some good advice, some of it simply passed unto me by members like OR and uglyskunk and a few others.
First of all, I'm gonna tell you that UNLV is a great recruiting spot. There aren't many high prestige schools to the north, south, and west so you have a huge zone to reach out to.
Here's some general advice:
-Do your research. If a school with higher prestige, more schollies, more NT $ comes onto your recruit, I would generally suggest you let them take the player. There's plenty of fish in the sea so don't lose a bunch of $ over one mistake. Trust me, I've made that mistake and learned quickly.
-Check the other recruits that your foes have considering them. If they have 5 considering them and only 4 schollies open, then you should consider battling. Also, if they are in multiple battles with relatively similar prestige schools, go ahead and battle. Chances are they will only be able to battle for a portion of the recruits that they want.
-Since your aren't in a BCS conference, you'll need to search long and hard for the high potential guys that have slipped through the cracks. It will require time, but don't leave any stone unturned. One of my current players was unranked when I recruited him and received All-American honorable mention last season. This year, he'll likely make 3rd team.
-You can target guys that are top 100 with your situation. Be careful though. Don't spend too much initial money. It's all about being smart and developing a sense of timing. You'll get the hang of it as you get more experience. There are certain instincts that you can't really tell to others.
