There's probably been a thread about this at some point, but I'm wondering if anybody has seen a greater difference between range and speed than  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Diego Perez. He has a 79-point difference between his range (91) and speed (12).

Just curious what the most you have ever seen. Or the fastest guys with no range.

I've seen SS with 90-ish range and 0 speed before, but it seems like CF usually have at least decent speed (40+).

This has been discussed before.  Range and speed are 2 different things, for sure.  Usian Bolt would have 100 speed if he was a HBD player.  But his range would be significantly less than 100, as he doesn't have the awareness and ability to patrol SS at a BL level.  The opposite can also be true - Cal Ripken was considered to be a great defensive shortstop, but nobody would tell you that Ripken was fast.

That said, there should be a better correlation.  91 range and 12 speed, and vice versa, doesn't exist IRL.

Speed has no effect at CIF.   The fastest 3B could have the range of a turtle because he doesn't react to the ball well.   I could easily see a 1B/3B having 91 range and 12 speed.

If range wasn't a constant number between positions, Mike, I'd agree with you.  But generally someone with a player with 91 range will be playing that player up the middle.

That's on us.   We're given that flexibility.   The entire defensive engine should probably be overhauled.  There aren't many average SS who become GG RF in MLB.

I agree.  I would love defensive ratings that change based on where you play them.

Here's a drastic difference between range and speed for you.

I'm with Mike and Burnsy, but then we've posted that before. Defensive ratings should change as you change position.

Hah nice. Got my guy beat.

Anybody ever found a guy with 90+ speed with low range?

And I'm not complaining about it. I understand it happens in real life (BJ Upton perfect example of a very fast guy who had poor range as a SS), it was more of just an idle curiosity.

FWIW, I'd like to keep the ratings the way they are, but add some sort of experience factor by position. I have no doubt that Troy Tulowitzki could make a fine RF, it would probably just take him a little while to learn the nuances of the position. So something that takes into account the players' ratings but also their experience in that position. I think this would add managerial skill and strategy to the game, and also help make spring training and minor league playing time more relevant. But it would obviously be a major overhaul that will never happen.
