Need an explanation about waivers.... Topic

I know a few owners who, at the 120 game mark each year, place many of their BL on the waiver wire.  I've not followed up what they do when they clear, but are they saving a ML service year when that happens?

I've seen some of these guys have less ML years than the stats show.  Do they have to send them down after clearing to save that year?

Thus bringing them up the next season after game 20?

No.  Players who clear waivers can be traded.     It just gives the owner options.

I do it every season but deal very few.   But I have options.

Thanks Mike.

This is why I asked...

There is a player in our league who came up for a partial year in season 8 so he aquired no ML year then.  Played all of the season 9 and 10 and was sent down at the end of that season.  Played another partial season in 11(started season in the AAA).  Full season in 12 before being sent down at the end.  Played another partial season in 13.  Then played the next 4 (14-15-16-17) in the BL.  He currently shows 7 major league seasons.  I was thinking if he was being sent down at the end of 10 and 12 that it was not counting the 11and 13 seasons towards ML years.  Does that sound correct?

No.  Any day spent on the ML roster counts as a day against his arb/FA time.  What the owner is doing is "gaming" the system.   He calls him up, clears him thru waivers and sends him down.  He doesn't accumulate much BL time that way.

So what would be the benefit in that?  If it doesn't delay Arb or FA, what is the point?  Sorry for sounding so stupid, but I am trying to figure out if I should be doing this.  He has been very successful and I am trying to learn some of the stuff he is doing.

Unless the player is a stud, he's getting some cheap time late in the season.   If you link the guy, I might be more help.   Open the player card, click the WifS icon and do the same in the post area.

Post the player, please.

He was playing games to delay arb/FA.  He's been a full-time BL player since he couldn't work it any longer.

So does it work to do that ?  This guy;

Had a great year this season and cleared waivers.  If I send him down now and delay his return to the ML level next season, will that keep his ML service # at 1 starting next season?

or at least adding another ML season next year?

If you have a kickass team, it pays to hold players back like that.  If you're trying to beat the kickass team, you can't really afford to do it unless you have a kickass team that doesn't really need the guy.

Mike-- hasn't that bug been fixed?  See tzent's post from 8/12/10 at the link, and note that all the fun and games with Knight went on before 8/12/10.

The sim used to not add days from consecutive seasons to determine arb eligibility-- you just got a season that counted towards arb if you were in the minors less than 20 days in that season.  So the only 3 seasons that counted towards arb for Knight were 9, 10, and 12; he therefore didn't start arbing until 13, and since he was down in 13 for > 20 days he remained an arb1 the following season (hence the $2.1M salary).  Now, I thought, the sim started adding consecutive seasons, so while the "super 2" bug is still inplay, you can't stall salary development forever (or at least until you run out of options).  I might be wrong, but I don't think this works as well as it used to.

This guy played in 357 games (not even counting the number he sat on the bench) in his first three years, but only showed 1yr service time. Now shows 5yrs service despite having spent nearly all of 7yrs in the bigs.
I've never had the guts to try it myself.
