FA or Release Message Topic

I took over an orphan and I'm trying to clean it up after the season is over.  The AAA team has a $5.2M P on contract for the next season that is not worth the money.  I've tried to remove him from the 40 man and I get a message that the player does not have to accept the removal, and would choose to be a FA (exactly what I'd like to have happen).   However - the message also says that my options are to keep him on the 40 man or release the player.  My question is - if I release the player under these circumstances (and messages)  am i still obligated to the contract for the next season or is this executing the player taking the FA route?  I do not see the option of removing him from the 40 man and him opting for FA.  any help understanding this is appreciated.

You cannot get out of his contract.  He is forcing you to either keep him on your ML roster, or release him.

If you release him, you are still responsible for next season's salary.  In this case, he would not become a "true" free agent because he is still under contract.  He just ends up in the FA pool, available to be signed by anybody for the ML minimum.  However, if there is a team or mutual option for next season, then the 25% buyout is automatically invoked.  You end up paying only a quarter of his salary, and he then become a true FA.

Looks like you that team owes him for seasons 13, 14, and 15 still.  Might as well keep him.

Perhaps not worth $5.5MM, but worthy of a spot on the ML roster...unless I got the wrong guy.

yeah, he looks pretty good to me

Yeah - that's the guy - he was in the minors when I took over - decided to leave him there in a (futile) effort to get him off my squad!  He's okay but not worth $5.5M.

Yeah he sucks!!!  75 innings of Mid 3 ERA really blows!!!

You should have no problem packaging him in a a trade where you're eating this seasons salary..

Solid Setup B guy - I think he deserves a roster spot on all but the top teams with deep bullpens.

Man, $5.5 isn't THAT far out of whack for him.  At $3M, he would be a steal.  With that durability he should easily throw nearly 80 innings a year of low to mid 3's ERA.

Set a 25 pitch limit.

He will be available nearly all the time.

If you set him on a 15/20 pitch limit, as a SuA he could throw 130 innings per year.  This guy is not a closer, but his salary is pretty spot on for his value, I would say.
