HBD newb here. Looking for some info on the game. Any threads that anybody can point me to that can help me get started? I've played GD for many seasons so not new to WIS but HBD is a whole new enchilada. Whats the timeline/commitment look like?

Thanks

First couple of weeks will overwhelm you.    150 players, dozens of ratings for each and lots of moving parts.   If you survive that without wrecking your team, you'll be OK.

The #1 rule is "If you're not sure, don't do it."   Ask somebody and then ask somebody else.

There are a few parts of the season that require a bit of attention.
Mainly the preseason of hiring coaches and seeking FAs.
The other time would be the amateur draft, which is time consuming, but pays off usually for those who put the time in.

I agree with Mike when he says ask someone then ask someone else.

The biggest help to me in my first season was the fact that I had 3 or 4 different "mentors" that I asked a lot of questions to.
I can't stress enough how helpful it was to hear the varying opinions and reasoning behind the opinions.

Its true. Like 66% of the action in HBD happens in the first RL week of the game.  Take a look at the schedule and plan on spending some time planning what you will need to do and *when*.  It helps to understand these things:

40 man roster
What the Rating Icons mean
How to compose a roster
How to set player settings

Feel free to sitemail me any questions.

Don't let other owners take advantage of you. Be very careful before you make any trades.
Overall ratings aren't as important as some of the individual ratings.
The buget can be tricky. Leave enough player payroll for your free agent and arbitration players.

Just a few of my past mistakes

.So far you are on the right track....you are asking for help.

Learn how the rule 5 draft works, and make sure you don't lose your best ML ready prospects in it.

I would echo what everyone else said. One key point DON'T make trades until you figure it out. What I would suggest would be to join a public world and get a few seasons under your belt playing the game and learning the system. Don't worry about winning and just learn everything you can. After a couple seasons, ask around and look for a good private world that'll let you in.

Reject all trades until you have a solid understanding of the game, there are a lot of owners who try to take advantage of new owners

I wouldnt join a public league. Find a good private world and search out a mentor that can help you

Try to find a world that needs a replacement owner for an abandoned team. Great way to learn the ropes without being subjected to the frenzy at the beginning of the season.

Careful on the trades to begin with.

Time commitment is as much as youput into it.....which will probably be more than you think, if you're like me.  I am still in a Progressive WIS league (mostly because I won a WS and ToC a few seasons ago) but I really don't pay that much attention to it.  I think this is a much better game.

Feel free to PM me any questions you have as you move along, if you wish.

Also search for WRKP RADIO or something in forums. Very long read, but it helped me a ton and is a good in depth introduction.

Thanks for the info guys.

So from what I'm reading:

Stay away from trades from teh time being. (Do SIMS trade?)
Learn Rule 5

I'm also trying to find out what's the timeline like. For instance in GD, a season would roll over then 7 days later recruitng starts, then something like 7 days later the season starts. I'm getting the impression that in HBD its the Commish's call to roll into the new season, correct?

Once the season rolls how does that timeline play out? Basically, I'm looking to get in but want to know what kind of time commitment will be required to get things rolling. Its seems like there is a ton more to absorb than what GD could ever offer. And thats a good thing.
