"Free agent demand reduction logic improved"

Will they stop asking for millions and accept minor league contracts after ST finally?
11/14/2011 5:44 PM
Hope not.  Type A for 54k?  Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.

If a Type A accepts a minor league deal, you'd think there wouldn't be any compensation for it.
11/14/2011 6:14 PM
Will compensation be updated once the new CBA is agreed upon and removes type and A and B free agents
11/14/2011 6:16 PM
Don't care about compensation.   I care about really good players signing minor league deals because no one wants to lose a pick.

Whatever, they can have exceptions for Type A players (who may suck and deserve the minors anyway).  I'm just hoping we don't see guys asking for 2 mill at the end of ST that could be useful for the minimum or in the minors as a backup plan.

Besides, there are 16 teams who would probably snag the player for around the ML minimum and only lose their 2nd round pick.

Whatever your plan is, it needs to be on a smooth curve.

Dropping from $2M to AAA overnight is not acceptable.

There is like at most 1 type A player who deserves the minors per offseason, not like it's ruining worlds if he goes to waste.

I was thinking a smooth curve, clearly 2M to 54k makes no sense.  And I'm not concerned with the Type A's going to waste, though I do believe they should stop giving compensation for them at the end of ST and have them ask for the ML minimum or a minor league deal.  There's just not much reason for guys to be asking for the contracts they are.

The only time bizarre demands happen imo is when somebody offers a contract, retracts, and then that player is delayed in dropping his demands.  But apparently they fixed that, and ever since then I can't recall wanting a player but finding his price to be unreasonable.  If I'll pay a guy $500K, i'll probably pay him $1.5M so it doesn't make a huge difference to me either way.  wrt type A status, i'd rather have it last through the draft so people don't want until day 1 of the regular season to circumvent compensation.

I think the current FA system is perfectly reasonable and it's never bothered me at all, really.

Sounds like your idea has been very well thought out.  Hopefully WifS sees that and ignores it.

I tend to agree with deanod that they need to wait on compensation until the draft.  The current system is WAY better than it used to be, when everyone went and scarfed up the Type A players at 1:15 in the morning after ST ended.  I would suggest keeping compensation until the draft and taking all the players still demanding more than the ML minimum and having their demands drop to 327k over the span of the first 25 games or so.  Then, if people want to stash them in AAA at least they will have to pay 327k for the honor of doing so.  As it stands, plenty of useful players sit on the free agent wire and rot because they refuse to lower their demands.

When ST started, compensation was removed at the scheduled end of FA, before R5.

Ive said that a few times.  MikeT23 would say something along the lines of "If he's so great why isn't he on the 40 man?  Why is he a free agent?"  A 62 overall  LF with 0 big league experience has no business asking for 4 years 4.8 mil.
