Why can't this guy hit? Topic

(or, "What would be an example in real-life?")

22-year-old infielder: Contact 63, Power 56, Batting Eye 53, Speed 74 ...

...but  Hitting vs. LHP/RHP is 6/8. (That's "six" and "eight", not "sixty-eight").

I have minor leaguers with worse Contact/Power/Eye/Speed ratings whose LHP/RHP numbers are in the 50's and 60's.

Does my medical staff need to get him new glasses, or what?

Splits are effectiveness vs the pitchers.   Your guy is a batting practice hitter.

Do I need new glasses or does that post seem REALLY BIG.

Mike, I understand what the splits are; but why aren't this guy's splits better, based on his other abilities? Or to put it another way, if he has average-or-better contact, power, eye, and speed, what skill is he missing that makes him a poor hitter?

boogerlips, No, I made it that big so I could read it. I'm the one who needs glasses.

He's missing the ability to effectively hit BL pitching.   As I said, he's great in BP but, once the pitcher is trying to get him out, he's nothing.

I like people with big text

You are not thinking in video game terms you are thinking in RL terms. In RL someone who can pick up the rotation of the ball and tell if it is a ball or strike, has good hand eye coordination to make contact, and is strong with power to hit the ball will make a good hitter. The game has an added value of VR and VL.

I'll disagree.  Put me in a batting cage and I'll eventually catch up to the 95 MPH fastball.   Put a BL pitcher on the mound that tops out at 80 and I'll won't hit a ball well or hard.   My contact and power would still be the same as I'll still be the same person.   But I wouldn't be able to effectively hit a ball against BL pitching.   Hence my 3:01 post.   The batting cage machine isn't trying to get me out, the BL pitcher is.

I'll take that bet.  You can't hit 95.
11/18/2011 4:25 PM
Guarantee I can hit pitching machine 95.  And I'll be able to 10 years from now if I can lift a bat.   It's just timing.
11/18/2011 4:39 PM
95 would scare the bejesus out of you, especially if it was those stupid yellow dimply balls.
11/18/2011 5:47 PM
Yeah, I believe you are underestimating 95.
11/18/2011 6:45 PM
Especially if its the kind of pitching machines Ive had the pleasure of hitting against.  Those balls were all over the place!  one could be 6 inches inside the plate, and the very next ball could be 6 inches outside of the plate.  Im pretty sure that machine was trying to strike me out!  lol

I believe I've seen 95.   But, if it's greeny's machine, the whole game changes.   A pitching machine, like a BP pitcher, is supposed to groove the ball.  No matter how slow your swing is, you can catch up to a grooved ball.   Machine goes clank, clank, clank, clank,  pitch.   You just have to figure out which clank it is when you start your swing.   Has anyone been to a batting cage before?

And, yes, 95 when you don't know where it's going is a bit scary.

So what about 100?  I once saw Carlos Beltran hitting a 120 mph machine.  120?  200?  If it is only about timing, then in theory there could no speed which you couldn't catch up to.  But I'm sure you would agree that there would eventually be a speed that you could not hit.

Or maybe we just have a different meaning of hit.  If you're simply talking about timing 30 or so balls, and then foul tipping the 31st, then sure, maybe you could do that.
