Key stats for pitching success Topic

I used to play a lot and have started a little bit again....I can control it, I know I can.

I'm trying to get back up the learning curve and wonder whether anyone could discuss what they think are key indicators for pitching success

seems to me that I recall that ERC# was a good indicator - if you could get that nice and low with a good HR# number you were probably on the right path - in reasonable cap theme leagues

what other guidance could folks offer for a guy who has spent the last couple of years off in Hoops Dynasty...??

Many owners use ERC+ as it is a rating just for that season.

I think the first thing you should consider is the type of pitchers you'll need based on the park you're gonna play in because even though you can find lots of great, low ERC# pitchers, if you place them in a park that's not condusive to their strengths and which exposes their weakness, you may find yourself quite disappointed with an expensive pitcher. Me personally, if I'm gonna play in a hitter's park, e.g., Kauffman Stadium, with a few exceptions, I generally go for low OAV#s (less than .200) and low ERC#s (less than 2.00) over BB/9 and WHIP, because IMO a walk will hurt you less than a hit, especially with runners on base, and because I personally think a pitcher's ERC# and his history is more indicative of the production you'll likely get from him. Of course I don't know this as FACT, but that's the way I look at when drafting a pitching staff.

May be a given, but also check IP/9 for your pitchers as there are many guys who have 200+ IP who you think can be starters who have IP/9 less than 5. These guys will not be able to pitch deep in games as their in-game fatigue will zero out past their real life IP/9.

Other than that, I agree that any # stat will help cross-compare season vs. season while any + stat will help compare two same season players.
