I may be able to pick up a FA, but if that fails, which of these 2 guys would be the better choice for 5th SP?

They are both servicable.  I would start with Villafuerte.  His vR is a bit low, but he will be more than OK as a #5, and he can throw a ton of pitches so he'll be friendly on your BP, too.  Marichal is a very fine LR guy.

I'd go villafuerte. His splits are better and he has a better 1st pitch. But it could go either way.

Marichal will turn in 160 innings of 5.00 ERA (low gb/fb, weak vLH, weak pitch selection)

Villafuerte will turn in 220 innings of 4.00 ERA (weakness vRH, gb/fb).

I think Villafuerte is clearly the option.

I'd start the season with Villafuerte, and if he doesn't work out to your satisfaction after 5-6 starts (gotta give him a fair chance) then give Marichal a couple of starts.

I often flip-flop between my #5 starter and the LR guy in my 'pen, depending on who's doing better, as the season progresses.
