If you decline a mutual option on a star player, do you get a compensation pick if he is signed as a free agent by another team or is there no comp. pick because a team/mutual option was involved?

To clarify the above correct answer-- you DO get a comp pick if the player declines, but not if you do.

So basically you might as well pick it up if he declines, because you gain nothing (well, I guess cap space) if you decline.

If you are in rebuild mode, I would probably decline, but if not, pick it up (unless he is no longer a star worth the money)

dont decline if its a star player. one comp pick possibly in the back of the 1st rd or supp round is not worth it. get one mroe season out of him rebuild or not. or trade him to  competitive team for a prospect or two. guy will give up a top prospect if they feel getting one stud will help them win the ws.
