Someone please explain to me why '90 Zane Smith has these kind of numbers (I know it's still early, only 30 games in, but this is ridiculous!)

I really don't know what I'm doing wrong. Why is he so bad?

While you're at it, could you also explain why '08 Rich Harden is also doing so HORRIBLY?

Small sample size. You also have a Tom Seaver that is way overperforming. Funny how we tend to miss those things.

Harden has allowed about a hit and half above what you should expect.  That is not horrible.

I know Seaver is doing better than he should, but the fact that both these guys are losing me games when I needed them to help close them out is really annoying

Zane Smith just gave up another er, hit and 2 bb in 1 inning of work. era up to 7.90 oav is .350

small sample size or not, that's RIDICULOUS

and I know '90 zane smith isn't amazing or anything, but he's better than that. 13 innings and he's been awful. why have him cost close to 3mil if he's going to blow so hard against average teams

13 innings is a TINY sample size.  You can find stats like that for almost any RL pitcher in a small sample size.  If you can't get past something like this - not egregious at all in the grand scheme of things - you probably shouldn't play this game.  It's going to drive you crazy.  You obviously aren't going to understand a statistical argument for why this isn't remotely a problematic result, so if you can't just accept it move on.

In 10 minutes surfing www.retrosheet.org,

Billy Wagner, who had a career ERA of 2.31 and in every season but one posted an ERA of 2.85 or lower. 
His 2000 season: 46 baserunners allowed and a 6.18 ERA in 27.2 innings.

Rollie Fingers from April 22 through May 11 1979: 18.2 IP, 23 hits, 8 walks, 14 runs.
Rollie Fingers from July 26 through August 12 1979: 7 G, 8.1 IP, 15 hits, 8 walks, 17 runs

Roger Clemens from June 1 through July 16 1987 (a year in which he won the Cy Young award): 10 G, 75 IP, 71 hits, 29 walks, 8 HRA, 43 runs allowed.  Gave up 7 runs twice, 8 runs once, 6 runs once...if he hadn't thrown a shutout against the hapless Indians in that stretch he would look even worse.

First thing I had to get thru my thick skull when I started was to understand this ISN'T real life baseball. Players aren't always going to perform like they did in real-life. Keep in mind that performances usually average out. If a player sucks early he might overperform later in the season, or vice-versa.

It doesn't look like its a sub $80m dollar theme league so I wouldn't expect ANY pitcher to perform to their RL statistics as any half-decent owner with enough salary will be able to select significantly better players than what these pitchers saw in those RL seasons.  Think about how any pitcher would perform if they played 162 all-star caliber hitting line-ups day in day out and you'll keep expectations in check.

If you want to get as close as possible to RL baseball, I'd suggest some type of progressive or low-cap theme league where owners can't pick the best of the best in the history of baseball.

I've used that Zane Smith multiple times and he was a dud for me as well.  Sometimes it just happens with some guys.

ynot, might I inquire where your managerial settings are on? Intentional walk setting? what innings your pitchers are set to come in? Fatigue settings? Relievers sometimes get really outragous stats, because a single bad appearance cantake a long time to rectify in their stat line.With no disrespect intended, and painting with a very broad brush, I find that if I adjust my managerial settings wisely, set appropriate pitch counts, monitor fatigue, and select an appropriate ball park, my pitchers  do about what Iwould expect. The higher the cap, the more out of whack all stats are liable to get

Appreciate all the input everyone.

dahsdebater - I understand it's a tiny sample size, but my whole bullpen has been under performing and losing games, so it's been a little disappointing. I do have 1 championship under my belt, so I'm not a complete noob or moron.

pfattkatt - my settings for pitchers are pretty conservative. Smith's MPC is 20 and he's a '3' as far as patience. Intentional walks are average.

I never expect these guys to perform to their RL stats. His OAV# was .206 and his WHIP# was .86. But, sometimes I'm still surprised by how bad some of these guys do. Even against average lineups in pitcher's parks.

I'll keep trying. Thanks again everyone.
