Base Running Aggressiveness Topic

Base Running Aggressiveness setting controls how frequently a team attemps to stretch a single into a double, a double into a triple or score from second on a single.

Just wondering what are some of your experiences with this managerial setting? Is it strategy to set high aggressiveness against low fielding or low range outfields, big parks etc? Lower aggresiveness against good fielding high range fielders? Most teams have speedsters you would like to be aggressive but also players you don't want to run and gamble.?

speed is the most important factor, run aggressively when your players have high speed ratings they are more likely to be successful. take fewer risks with HR hitters coming up, extra bases are wasted when the next guy hits a homerun or walks. and run more in low scoring games, playing for 1 run makes less sense when your team is designed to score 6 runs. the ideal running team would be a speedy slap-hitting team in a pitchers ballpark with strong pitching and defense.
I never use the #1 setting it's too cautious. 5 may be overly aggressive don't make too many outs on the bases. I'll typically use 2 or 3, sometimes 4 depending on the team. opponents fielding is not much of a factor, I'd imagine you'd run more against good fielding teams because it's a little harder to score any other way.
these are only educated guesses. I haven't studied the box scores closely enough to do the number crunching.

I agree with Rbow's reasoning on what types of teams/players benefit from a stronger BRA setting. Like him, I have no idea how much that setting helps/hurts at the different levels, so also like him I eyeball it. Unless you're prepared to do a ton of research, I'd just stay conservative and use the 2,3, and 4 settings depending on your team makeup.

I generally keep my team at 3. I might take it down to 2 if I have an incredibly slow team.

It seems that outfielders do not necessarily make the same number of assists that they did in real life. So it does seem that base running aggressiveness does depend more on the speed of the baserunner.

""Base Running Aggressiveness setting controls how frequently a team attempts to stretch a single into a double, a double into a triple or score from second on a single"".

So is SIM saying on Sac Fly or 2nd to 3rd on a fly out BRA is NOT a factor? ?

Like most of you who have posted, I really have no idea how much BRA helps or hurts.  But for whatever reason, when starting a season, I routinely set my BRA to 5 and leave it there all season.

Does BRA affect base stealing?  I assume that it does, as I find that when i face a D-arm catcher and my settings are very aggressive, my team steals more than if i set it at 3.  Or, is it just my imagination?

I am not sure if the purpose of BRA is to impact Base Stealing as much as it effects taking the extra base. This leads to the question of does outfielder fielding or range translate into throwing baserunners out. In which case you set high aggresiveness against poor throwing outfielders??

I've used the very-aggressive setting with fast teams that hit few HR. All runners rated 70 or higher.

They constantly go first to third. They regularly slide in under the tag, especially at home. They get thrown out infrequently.

I think walks are a non-factor, and generally fielding as well, since WIS doesn't rate arms anywhere but catcher.

I don't vary the setting by park, either. I see no reason for it not to work as well or better in Coors as it does in Busch or Safeco.

My speed team in one progressive has reached the LCS or better three straight seasons and leads the wildcard standings currently.

I believe the SIM takes the baserunners speed into consideration. I have experimented with the settings with teams of mine that had no chance of winning, or who had clinched. With the setting at 5, fast runners always take the extra base, but not slower runners. The problem I have with setting it at 5 is sometimes SIM takes chances that, based on the game situation, I wouldn't want to take. But broadly speaking, I agree with DT. If you have the speed, it is a waste not to exploit it.nOnce it is set, tho, that's the way it is, and the game engine may run you out of a game. The question of slower runners taking wild chances is moot. Just like basestealing, SIM takes basreunners speed into consideration, so your 30s won't take bases like your 80s.
