WIld swings in the RPI Topic

Ok, so I just improved from 92 to 69.  I beat a bad team, and my opponents-to-date had an ok night, but nothing spectacular.  My understanding of the RPI is that it's your record, your opponents record and their opponents.  Curious as to how I could improve that much in the 12th game of the season.

it is pure arithmetic, small sample size means that a win and some wins by your opponents - and some losses by teams ahead of you can move it

plus, the rpi as reported is a ranking - you are 92nd or 69th - at that spot the teams can be very close so a small absolute change in rpi moves the rank a lot

Just like in real life, if a team is ranked number twenty four, beats a bad team squeaking by. . while five teams ahead of them lose, they may still move up.]
