1973/74 &1974/75 Progressive filled !! Topic

We have up to 3 openings for a  double season progressive that started with the 1967/68 & 1968/69 seasons, the first two years of the ABA. This is the era of Wilt, Abdul-Jabbar, Hayes, Baylor, Robertson, Dave Bing, Earl Monroe etc.

We had only one owner leave the league after season 1 and a second owner leave after season 2. We had 18 different owners for season 1 as 6 owners took 2 teams each. 17 of these owners returned for season 2 and we added 2 new owners. The only owner not returning for season 2 was scottyboy4, who had 2 teams and has disappeared from many Sim League Baseball and Basketball leagues. In season 2 there were 5 owners, including myself, who retained both their teams (owners with 2 teams are not permitted to make trades between their 2 teams). 18 of the  19 owners returned for season 3 and we added two new owners as one of the 5 owners with 2 teams gave up one team. All 20 owners are returning for season 4 but 3 of the 4 owners with 2 teams would like to give up one of their 2 teams, although all 3 have indicated a willingness to keep their teams if new owners are not found. 2 of those owners (including myself) have elected to show both teams as available but will remove the second team after one is taken. Thus there are 5 teams listed as available but only 3 may be taken. The available teams are shown below.

The first three seasons have been very successful and enjoyable. There are 11 days left in the third season and we will then be able to set the draft order and draft for season 4.  Thisfourth season's rookies include Moses Malone,John Drew, Mickey Johnson, Bobby Jones, Maurice Lucas, Truck Robinson, Scott Wedman and Jamaal Wilkes among others. There will be a 5 round draft for available players (about 90-95% of whom are rookies). There will also be an add/drop round following the draft. As noted below, there will be plenty of minutes available.

Owners expressing interest will be given temporary access to our private forum, which contains full league rules, where a list of available players for the third season will be posted as soon as all keepers are posted, and which is where the draft will be held.

This fourth season you will be able to select which of 2 seasons you want to use for each of your players (assuming they are active both seasons). This season (4) you may use 1973/74 or 1974/75, the following season (4) 1975/76 or 1976/77 etc.

One concern expressed prior to the start of our first season was whether there would be sufficient minutes available. That proved to be a non-issue. A minimum of 19,680 minutes are required and teams averaged around 23,000 minutes. My 2 teams in season 1 had 29,000 + and 27,000 + minutes.

Rather than managing teams with recent players this is an opportunity to manage teams from an older era.

No rookies, no WW. Trades of players OK and draft picks current season only.

Drafts subsequent to the initial draft will be in inverse order of regular season record, with the tiebreaker being total point differential (points scored less points allowed) with the team with the worse point differential drafting earlier. However, as an anti-tanking provision for the 1st round only there will be a weighted lottery among the 4 teams with the worst record for the first 4 draft positions. The same tiebreaker will be used for these positions.

Since this is a progressive league I do request that you not sign up unless you expect to be able to particpate for at least 5 seasons.

If interested please sign up below and you will be given access to the private forum. You will need to post a keeper list for season 3 as soon as possible after you have reviewed your selected team's roster and decided which players to keep. If desiring further information indicate below and you will be given temporary access to the private forum.

The double season format assures rapid turnover of player (a player with a 10 year career will only have 5 seasons in this league), so that teams with losing records should be able to improve rapidly. To illustrate this point, the following table shows the season by season records through 60 games in season 3.

  Season 1   Season 2   Season 3
Record Div. Record Div. Record Div.
Current Name Won Lost Rank Won Lost Rank Won Lost Rank

You will see in the above table that the Seattle Supersonics, who had the #1 draft pick in season 2, went from the worst record in the league to the best record in the league and won the championship. The Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks have also shown significant improvements in season 3. At the other end of the spectrum, my Portland Trailblazers won the championship in season 1 and have steadily declined since and will likely have a losing record in season 3. The Milwaukke Bucks have seen a similar decline. In fact, of the 9 best teams in season 1 only 2 will have winning recorrds in season 3 and only the Miami Floridians have remained in contention for a division title.

My point, as I have stated in the past when advertising this league, is that with the double season format, the rapid turnover makes it possible to turn around bad teams fairly rapidly. Of course, the flip side is that good teams may decline rapidly.

The league has been remarkably stable. Thus far we have lost only 2 of our original owners. Come join a stable and enjoyable league !!
