Minimum cores for recruits C- Prestige DIII team? Topic

Hey, I wanted to get a realistic idea of what the minimum cores are in recruits for a C- prestige DIII team... I'm recruiting for a Motion offense, and Man-To-Man defense so I know I need a Passer/BH, Perimiter shooter, Rebounder, Low Post and SF.

What cores should I look for in these types of players?

I like this post, I to would like to know some minimums for potential and ratings both when the player is freshmen and what he will develop into.

It isn't what they are today, but what they will be when they finish growing you need to look at. For d3 a good PG will be at least 75/75 in BH and PASS. He needs to have decent SPD and Def too. At least 70 in SPD and 45-50 in DEF when he is done growing. 80+ in PER and LP are good. For bigs, try to get guys who will be 60+ in ATH.

Those #'s are really high....

Close to those would be pretty good.

Yeah I agree. Those numbers may be a bit high to aim for at a C- prestige team. Heck, I still had trouble finding players with all the cores mduncan mentioned even with an A+ prestige.

When I first started at Macalester in Wooden (C prestige), I was a brand new to this game. I was advised by some veteran coaches to shoot for the following minimums:

Guards (both PG and SG)- 65-70 speed, 40 Def
PG- 60PASS/60BH
SG- 70+ PER

Post players- 40-45 ATH, 40 DEF, 70 REB, 40 Def
at least one post player with 70+ LP would be ideal, and one with 80+ REB

SF- at least 40 DEF, but you will probably fill this spot with either a SG type (60+ spd, 40-50 ath) or a PF type (40+ath/40+spd/40+reb). Some LP and PER would also be ideal.

Keep in mind the above numbers are not starting ratings. They are minimum targets for a player's junior and senior years. If you can exceed those minimums that obviously would be great. Above all else though...ATH/SPD/DEF should be your priority categories. Be willing to make sacrifices in other categories for a little extra of each.

Yeah, my numbers are a tad high, but they are good goals to aim for. It will be tough to ge them all in the same player at PG or in the post, but try to get as close as you can and you will be in good shape. Also remember that the position a player is assigned is window dressing. There is no reason you can't play a SF at PG or C if he has the right cores.

When I was in DIII, I tried to have a team average(not including any walk ons) of 50+ ath and 50+ def. You won't necessarily win a championship at that level, but you can be a regular in the NT. I wouldn't take anyone at DIII with a WE of less than 20.

Also, the one position I would sacrifice some ath for is PG, but I don't know if anyone else would agree with that. I always had enough trouble finding good distributing PG's at DIII without also finding a guy with 50+ ath.

Thanks everyone, one more recruiting related question. When pulling down a player, what is the difference between these 3 phone call responses:

"I called Jim Howes 10 times, left 4 messages, before he finally called me back. He's pretty sure that he's going to get an offer from a 'big time program' but we are an option for him if that falls through."

or

"Like a pole-vaulter, I'm treating you straight up Coach - you're a backup option for me. Keep in touch and you never know..."

and

"Update on Curtis Lyons, looks like we're a backup option right now. He thinks he's going to a 'big time' program."

^ no difference whatsoever.

oj is right - all 3 indicate they are candidates to drop down or if you wanted/have the budget you could attempt to pull down
